Description

The licuados are already some of the best in la naranja: The Pancho Pantera has a cinnamon nose and uses Mexico's version of Quik, Choco Milk, while the one of nuez tastes just like a nuez paleta, which is to say it has a gritty texture, subtle notes of walnuts and almonds, and another Mexican product, La Lechera condensed milk. And the biónico, a fruit salad of chopped-up wonder, will wrestle down a heatwave like Tito Ortiz on a 100-pound weakling.

  • 2012 | Best Coffee

An earthy dark-roasted coffee is spiced with cinnamon and sweetened with piloncillo, which is what gives café de olla its signature sweetness--oh, and the actual olla, an earthenware pot that lends a rich, smooth flavor to this elixir. But Café Calacas owners Jackie and Rudy Cordova use an espresso blend to brew this café de olla, imparting the traditional full-body flavor of this drink, a refreshing switch from your local, watered-down cup of coffee. The coffee... More »

  • 2011 | Best Hair Product

What Brylcreem was for a generation of American men, Three Flowers represented for a generation of Latinos: pomade that made hair shine as bright as a spotlight. The only problem was its industrial strength meant it remained in your hair after multiple shampoo treatments. In comes Suavecito, a pomade with the same iron grip as Three Flowers, but with an even brighter shine, a more pleasant scent and a smoother texture, yet it washes out easily. The Santa Ana guys behind it aren't exactly... More »

  • 2010 | Best Affordable Art Classes

Calacas is known for its Chicano-themed T-shirts and rare Mexican artesanias, as well as for co-hosting Santa Ana's massive Dia de los Muertos event. What gets it less attention, however, is the store's workshops leading up to the Mexican holiday--lectures, print screenings, even how-tos on making altars, the massive tributes to the faithful departed. But the best class husband-and-wife owners Rudy and Jackie Cordova offer is the one that teaches you how to make skulls out of... More »
