The new venture from former Melange chef Chris Lee combines the best aspects of the coffeehouse and the fast-casual joint - comfortable but not faux-bohemian, efficient but not corporate-slick - with a soupçon of Parisian bistro. Here you can have a light lunch of excellent lobster bisque, sip a cappuccino while you study for the LSAT or even blot out a bad day with real-deal absinthe. Breakfast offers soufflés and Panini; soups, salads and sandwiches comprise the selections for lunch and dinner. Standouts are the beignets and the crab "cake," the latter a tart with blue crab meat and cream cheese in a short-dough crust.
- Chris Lee is leaving his position as executive chef of the In Good Company restaurant group owned by Ami Grimes and Gurpreet Padda, as reported yesterday by Sauce's Ligaya Figueras. In Good Company ... More »

Since the dawn of time, a successful coffeehouse has required two things: the ability to manage the pre-office morning rush, and beaucoup electrical outlets for layabouts to keep their laptops humming while they sip and loiter. Café Ventana succeeds on both counts and oh, so many more. Situated on the border where midtown gives way to the Central West End, the café adds a touch of artsy French style to an otherwise industrial stretch. Thanks to the patio and spacious annex,... Solo diners aren't uncommon near college campuses. It's easy to blend in among students engrossed in their studies, swilling cups of bottomless coffee. Trouble is, the joints kids tend to frequent are uninspiringly similar, in both menu and décor, to the dorms in which they live. But not Café Ventana, an elegant throwback to New Orleans' past, located on the northwest edge of Saint Louis University. Tables and bars are scattered throughout the large dining room, lit by... A coffeehouse should percolate more than just good coffee: Creativity, community and peace of mind are also essential ingredients in a winning brew. Café Ventana succeeds thanks to a beautiful space that feels just right whether you're chatting with friends over cappuccino or wine, studying for final exams, reading the daily fishwrap or writing the latest revision of your Great American Novel. Add a menu that draws from the traditions of both Paris and New Orleans, and you could... More »
