With its glittery M on the door, the DJ booth in the kitchen, the polished sheen of silver-and-white marble, and the walls of flat screens pulsing like blue strobes, Café Martorano looks as much strip club as supper club. Lines snake out the doors on weekends, and the wait for a table can be up to three hours. Owner/chef Steve Martorano is a gigantic, 240-pound fish in our little pond, attracting celebs like Ludacris, Shaq, and the cast of The Sopranos to chow down on his baseball-sized meatballs, grilled octopus, veal Sinatra loaded with fresh lobster meat, gourmet Philly cheese steaks, and a menu of high-profile South Philadelphia Italian-American classics. Everything's cooked to order with the best ingredients -- EVOO, San Marzano tomatoes -- so don't even think about asking for substitutions. As the line on the bottom of the menu warns: "Don't Break Balls!"
Academy Award winner Mo'Nique is quite the energizer bunny. After finishing two back-to-back shows at the Fort Lauderdale Improv last weekend, most people would just want to curl up in their hotel roo... More »
Maybe you're thinking that Steve Martorano was afraid his meatballs weren't enough to pull the hungry gamblers from the blackjack tables. This is a ridiculous thing to think because (a) his meatballs ... More »
What do an Olympic athlete, a basketball legend, and a star DJ have in common? If you said meatballs, you win! Actually, it's not just any meatball. It's Steve Martorano's meatballs that have been ... More »
Olympian Ryan Lochte was in South Florida this past weekend to film scenes for his new E! reality show, What Would Ryan Lochte Do?Although the swimming sensation and 11-time medalist seemed to be less... More »
It's absolutely no secret that my favorite Food Network celebrity is Paula Deen. Warm, funny, and homey -- I could look into her dancing blue eyes forever as she teaches me how to incorporate butter i... More »
This dish right here puts a line in the sand between the Café Martorano lovers and haters. It's $24. For that, you could buy two appetizers at most places. Or ten raw eggplants. But this dish also typifies what's special about Café Martorano: Its chefs put tremendous care into every single ingredient. Those slices of eggplant come crisp on the outside -- difficult when you're essentially stacking them in a salad -- and warm and soft in the center. The mozzarella is of... More »
Inside the hollowed-out crusty Italian roll are finely chopped rib-eye, gooey American cheese, a hint of garlic, sautéed peppers, and onions. This is no withering sandwich; it's a monster, football-sized and more expensive than the average Philly cheese steak: $18. But elevated ingredients ensure that this is likely the best rendition you've ever had, and the pricey Italian joint, run by Philadelphia native Steve Martorano, is worth the trip, regardless of the staff's bravado and... Movie pitch: Based on a true story. In a tropical American city long known as party central for spring breakers, the population begins to suffer disturbing nightmares. As neighbors compare notes, they're stunned to learn that their midnight visions are identical -- they dream they're chasing a gigantic meatball along Oakland Park Boulevard. As days pass, the citizens are overcome with inexplicable cravings: for South Philly-style cheese steaks; for spaghettini with clams, pancetta and... More »
Given the lack of a written menu in this trendy, eat-what-they-serve Italian bistro, prices are an equally unknown entity. Allow us to give a general guideline -- they're high. Really high. You just don't know it till the bill arrives. Which is why it's always wise to be supping with someone whose favorite phrase is (insert South Philly Italian accent) "Lemme take care of that." When it comes to chef-owner Steve Martorano's establishment, where gangster movies play ad nauseam and the scenes... More »
Chef-owner Steve Martorano likes it when his establishment is compared to a place you might see on The Sopranos or spot in a Godfather film. In fact, he even plays gangster movies and runs modern mob episodes on the multiple televisions posted throughout this South Philly-style trattoria and turns up the volume when a particularly, er, juicy part comes on. Despite the plethora of F-bombs bursting in air, both fare and service are far from coarse. Indeed, the place is so popular that you can... More »
Owned by relatives of famed Philly mobster Raymond "Long John" Martorano, this pricey ristorante serves up some fine pasta. Just ask our finest suspected local mobsters. Wiseguys like "Sideburns" Cerrella, Vinnie "The Fish" Romano, and Jimmy Tortoriello have all frequented the place, according to intelligence reports from organized-crime detectives. We wondered why the Sinatra tunes were played at high volume; could it be to drown out the questionable conversations taking place among men... More »
My favorite place up in Ft. Lauderdale - it's out of the way, hard to find in a strip mall, but if you go there one day, there's a chance that both Madonna and Shaq might be there waiting in the parking lot because the food is so good. The owner said that everyone waits, there's no preferential treatment ... only for Frank Sinatra he says...
Great place, and Steve's also opening one up at the Hard Rock Live.
the food there is awesome too. philly style italian - chef Martorano DJs and cooks all at the SAME time.
