While the decor at Cafe Chihuahua may recall some of the kitschy “Mexican” joints we grew up with in the ’burbs, this spot on South Federal is no dog. The menu is dense, expansive and pregnant with possibilities. Besides the typical combination plates, you’ll find menudo (seven days a week), tacos with lengua or tripa, ceviche tostadas, multiple takes on shrimp in sauce and a pregnant burrito: a ground-beef enchilada entirely encased in a bean burrito, then smothered with green chile in your choice of heat. The extra-hot is fresh and full of the distinct flavors of each of its vegetable components; smothering a savory pudding of well-seasoned beef, beans and corn tortilla, it makes for a satisfying mess. Most of the other dishes are just as good – but remember to save room for the fruit-filled empanadas in the case by the front counter, which make a great to-go dessert.
