Cafe by day, bar by night, Byzantio is a comfortable neighborhood hangout that feels a bit like coming home. And, in a sense, you are; it's tucked into an old house along West Gray that's easily accessible for downtowners at lunch or Montrose residents at dinner. The Greek food is better than it has to be for a bar, but don't go at night if you're in a rush. By the time the sun goes down, Byzantio has been trans-formed into a hip, casual bar where the spanakopita and souvlaki are more a bonus to the beer and atmosphere.
I'm loathe to say that Houston has any "soup Nazi"-type characters dominating its dining rooms or kitchens -- only because I hate to start any post off with Godwin's Law. Instead, I prefer to think of... More »
Sometimes, half the fun of watching the Super Bowl is watching it with a crowd. So we've rounded up a few places that'll ensure you're not alone this Sunday evening -- and that you're not hungry or th... More »
See more photos from Byzantio's kitchen and cozy dining room in our slideshow. My dining companion, a longtime Montrose resident, remembers a time when Byzantio only had a toaster oven sitting at the end of its long bar. I don't. I never went to... More »

Great patio for hanging out with a glass of wine and some hummus! But if you are in the mood to chow down, you have to try the "KALAMAKI" GREEK SOUVLAKI. It is sooo flavorful!
For those initial getting-to-know-you interludes, you want a place like Byzantio, where there are plenty of cozy nooks and hideaways with plush sofas under dim lighting. Start off the date with a coffee to maintain awareness during the "So, do you have any brothers or sisters?" phase. Move on to some wine or a tawny port to show off your sophistication. Then step up the mood with something adventurous, such as ouzo. The staff at this family-owned Greek coffee bar will be happy to make... More »
Byzantio Cafe Ilias Giannakopoulos gutted his house on West Gray to make room for the European flourishes omnipresent in this hip new cafe, where he and partner Dora Manolopoulos keep the Greek tradition of hospitality alive day after day. Inside you'll find a smorgasbord of Hellenic delights: stuffed grape leaves, fresh olives, sliced meats and feta, feta, feta. But it ain't the food that makes Byzantio the best new cafe; it's the atmosphere, where wood meets stone meets some random Greek... More »
