By's comes by its appeal the old-school way: a 1950s sound track; a no-nonsense, no-frills order-at-the-counter M.O.; a straightforward menu of burgers and fish; and a very generous pricing scheme. Take the King Lou burger: Tucked inside a sesame-seed bun that's roughly as big as Rhode Island are three burger patties, a heaping pile of fried ham, some bacon slices, a pool of cheese, and that hard-to-define mess known as "the works." Fries are of the hand-cut, slightly soggy variety. Throw in a medium drink, and the whole deal will only set you back $9.49, tax included.
