Bubby's began life as a bar aimed at loft-dwelling Tribeca artists in 1990, but has since morphed into a sort of comfort-food canteen that has managed to remain plebian despite the increasing wealth of the neighborhood population. It's also one of the city's foremost purveyors of something we might call "locavoric trailer cooking." Thus, an entrée of chicken and dumplings is improved with Anson Mills cornmeal, locally sourced poultry, and farmers' market vegetables. There are good burgers, of course, but the biggest surprise comes from the barbecue: the applewood-smoked brisket deserves to be classified as one of the best barbecued meats in town. Lined with park benches, the room is comfortable, but a little too brightly lit.

great breakfast, bad service
My kids wear their Bubby's Ts around the house. The only other items to make it into our home from a restaurant are coffee mugs from Dottie's and that spot is the best breakfast in the US. So best in NY is pretty damn good. Amazing baked goods, thoughtful service, a bright airy space with lovely outside seating. If it's spring or fall, this might be one of the nicest places to be in Manhattan.
After gorging on a slice of BUBBY'S famous "Mile-High Apple Pie," you may find yourself seeking refuge in the Tribeca restaurant's ladies' room. But leave all self-esteem on the stairs going down to the basement, as the lavatory walls are decorated with black-and-white photos of skinny, gorgeous hipsters smoking, drinking, and having the time of their lives. Exactly what you want to see when you just can't manage to button the top button of your pants. More »
