Let's play free association. Theater....steaming pots of java. Bowling shoes....petite syrah. Neighborhood bar....exquisite beer list. Clearly you've been hanging around the Bryant-Lake Bowl, where a certain sort of perfect life has been achieved, a life where a love of the vine and a fascination with mastering the 7-10 split exist in beautiful harmony. Meals are reliable, hipster-diner fare: salads, pasta, fruit, cheese, sandwiches, burritos, and breakfast. Even if you're not much of an athlete, the Forties decor and unpushy service make this a swell place to while away the afternoon.
Commenting on the frustrations of contemporary existence has always been a function of the theater, yet original works dealing directly with econom...
Two new works-in progress get a showing in one evening.
Hot off the heels of his Guthrie Theater debut in Servant of Two Masters, playwright and actor David Hanbury's got a slew of exciting stuff in store, including the next round of the Women in Crisis Fi... More »
For the past couple of years, the Women in Crisis Film Series has nobly screened craptastic films that had previously been banished to $1 VHS bins or aired late at night on "women-friendly" cable channels. Each evening features an awesomely awful... More »
While most adult variety shows are a little bit like a party anyway, tonight's installment of Soirée will be extra celebratory. Why? Because it will also serve as a birthday shindig for the evening's host, the always fabulous Sweetpea. Onstage... More »
Joseph Scrimshaw is too smart of a comedian to settle for the easy joke, which is what makes his latest venture, How to Swear Like a MInnesotan, such a beguiling concept. Taking aim at our collective ... More »
Joseph Scrimshaw has built his reputation on clever, nerd-friendly comedy showcased in his various Minnesota Fringe Festival shows and those with his company, Joking Envelope (he also spent part of the month performing on Jonathan Coulton's JoCo... More »
If bowling is an ideal game for socializing, one best enjoyed with a cold beer (or three) and a handful of friends, then Bryant-Lake Bowl must be the ideal bowling alley. There's none of that impersonal, computerized scoring or other gimmicks, nor do you have to worry about leagues hogging all the lanes if you come on the wrong night of the week. Instead, you get to enjoy the thrills of do-it-yourself scoring, admittedly a relic of a bygone era but one that gets more fun in direct... More »
Seriously, watch Blind Date if you want a decent blueprint for a good first date. The producers have a sound basic structure, even as they populate it with silicone augmented sociopaths and sleazy fame-whores: Combine light exercise with artistic endeavor, finish with a shared meal, and you can see whether a nascent love affair is going to spark or sputter. Short of a production company picking up your bar tab, one of the best first-date bets in town is Monday nights at Bryant-Lake Bowl. The... More »
Some of us unlucky few, when put face to face with an individual we are attracted to for a first date, are reduced to neurotic, sweaty-palmed, compliment-fumbling train wrecks barely able to formulate cohesive sentences. Just like Stan Marsh on South Park, still unable to tell Wendy Testaburger his true feelings. It is for people like us that there is the Bryant-Lake Bowl, by far one of the most laid-back atmospheres in town and one place where first dates are bound to run smoothly.... More »
One should never count out the yuk-yuk progeny of Aristophanes from Brave New Workshop, Comedy Sportz, or Stevie Ray's Comedy Troupe. But the Bryant-Lake Bowl remains our favorite spot for left-of-center comedy. The Scrimshaw Brothers regularly bring their brainy satire and shameless silliness to the BLB's tiny stage, and Joshua Scrimshaw's moonlighting gig with David Mann and Craig Johnson in The Worst Holiday Pageant Ever was funnier than an eggnog dunk tank. Our absolute favorite BLB show... More »
There are certainly more impressive (read: expensive and fancy) options, but on a very first date, who needs the pressure? (Also, more cynically, are you really sure yet that this person is worth a hundred-dollar dinner?) So allow us to suggest a more casual option, the Bryant-Lake Bowl, where you'll find all the first-date necessities and more. The food is great and reasonably priced and can accommodate anyone from vegan to raging carnivore (for those who fall in the middle of that... More »
The Bryant-Lake Bowl is, of course, not exclusively devoted to comedy, but it is home to some of the smartest get-your-laugh-on theater in town, from sketch comedy to one-person shows, and a lot of Fringe Festival revivals. Here's where you can catch the acerbic satire of the Ministry of Cultural Warfare, the rock 'n' roll goofs of Ferrari McSpeedy, the one-of-a-kind phenomenon of No Refunds Theatre's Kung Fu Hamlet, and many of the Twin Cities' best improv groups. Among other notably... More »
Eighteen beers on tap. Eighteen! Pilsner Urquell, Bell's Amber, Hop Ottin' IPA, Grain Belt--all for a mere $3.75 a pint, and that's not even counting the special, guest beers. Then, another 15 lagers in cans or bottles--from Hamm's in cans to Sapporo. Ten ales of every stripe, from cult-favorite Theakston's Old Peculiar (at $3.75 not much more than you pay at the beer store) to Young's Old Nick Barley Wine. Add in half a dozen more stouts, half a dozen porters, and then, factor in 16 more... More »
"Best" doesn't always mean "most." No, Bryant-Lake Bowl does not offer every beer known to man or woman. But they do have a mighty liberal selection of fine, high-quality beers. The tap beers ($3.75) include a nice array of local brands (two each from Summit and James Page, plus one from Schell's, and Grain Belt Premium) as well as some of the world's finest, most venerated beers: Guinness, Newcastle, and Anchor Steam. They also offer a good selection of other bottled ales, lagers, porters,... More »
