Description

A dive bar among dives, the Brown Barrel doesn't have any frills. For the past 25 years, owners Bob and Cathy Lyons have had a strict open-door policy to all patrons, even as the gentrification process slowly engulfs the bar's South Broadway neighbors. The nautical-themed bar (complete with glossy marlins adorning the walls) is a step back in time, but without the false retro kitsch: Drinks are cheap, peanuts and popcorn are the only food fare, and a real jukebox will give you five songs for a dollar, with currency often supplied by the small staff of non-judgmental bartenders. Pinball and pool tables are around, but conversation is the bar's star attraction, with the Brown Barrel staff offering advice and a good listening ear to a diverse group of regulars. This bar is truly a dying breed, taking care of its own small community through generous weekly and monthly tab options and offering up a full holiday spread on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Brown Barrel may look like a hole-in-the-wall, but it's always open and welcoming, no matter who or what you are.

Save for the jukebox and TVs, the Brown Barrel looks like it hasn't changed since the '60s. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right It's easy to walk past this joint; the exterior is about as nondescript as a plainclothes policeman at a dad convention. And it's even easier to miss at night, since it can close as early as 11 p.m. depending on how busy it is. But if you're an early-morning drinker and need a mug of Landshark Lager instead of a cuppa joe, the Brown Barrel's the place for... More »

The telephone at the Brown Barrel Tavern is ringing, but owner Bob Lyons pays it no mind. He's mid-conversation with the only guy at the bar under forty, something about sub-floors and plastic sheeting and mold. He finishes filling two mugs of $2.... More »

Many of you have these marevelous feelings toward this dive, the Brown Barrel Tavern on So. Broadway. Not so in my world. Every time I drive by it I get this nauseated sick feeling in my stomach. You see, it destroyed my non-existent childhood. Several men in my family including my father thought spending tiime on a bar stool at the good ol Brown Barrel was far better than spending time at home. I missed out on so much. My poor mom would ask if I'd call down there and plead with my daddy to come home. My pain was deep, living in a household of alcoholics. Disappointment after disappointment. The Brown Barrel was the home of the men in my family and that hurt. The bartender would cover for them. "Nope, they're not here" she'd tell us even tho their car was parked right outside. If it wasn't the Brown Barrel, it would've been someplace else I'm sure. I remember going in there under age, needing to see it with my own eyes to believe that they were in there. It was heartbreaking. Then when my nephews and nieces kept up the tradition, well, it's almost an unbearable memory. That's what the Brown Barrel Tavern means to me. Nothing but heartbreak about a family that could've been.
