Don Arturo Restaurant
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312
New Times Broward-Palm Beach's Description
Nestled in a cinder-block building, Don Arturo is dark. Gothic chandeliers emit flat light, while red velvet curtains blanket windows. Plaques pepper wood paneling with medieval fighters in full regalia. The food is brighter. The staff will chat with you in Spanish, a sign they're used to a local crowd, here for authentic cooking. Start with a homemade sangria with fresh citrus. For a first course, order the pork tamale. It's a beautiful display: a cornhusk layered with homemade masa piled with ribbons of roasted pork. In a second dish, a handful of butterflied camarones nestles in green Enchilado sauce. The ropa vieja is a classic, a moist and tender pot roast. If you're in the mood for something along the lines of Spanish – like a paella or the zarzuella – go early, and be prepared to wait, as they take at least 45 minutes to prepare.
