Back in the dark days of the early 1980s, visionaries Tom and Molly Broder founded a fragrant little empire of handmade pastas, imported olive oils, olives, cheeses, meats, vinegars, and other high-quality imported ingredients. Local gourmets were exceedingly pleased. But when they added spicy, jazzy pizzas by the slice, sandwiches, take-out homemade pasta sauces like a caper-rich puttanesca, and deli treats from grilled asparagus (seasonally) to just-piped cannoli, there was veritable dancing in the streets. Nowadays the little gourmet shop ranks as one of Minneapolis's most beloved spots--so go early, it gets packed.
Pizza by the slice, Italian panini to go, lasagna, spaghetti, eggplant parmigiana, stromboli--if it's Italian you're craving, Broders' Cucina Italiana has got it all. The deli near the corner of 50th and Penn has been around for 20 years, and the food is fabulous. Dine in the tiny eating area, or get your food to go. To round out the salads and entrées, Broders' offers Italian sodas and a bevy of delectable desserts, including classics like tiramisu and pannetonne bread pudding.... More »
It's hard to know where to direct the eyes when inside Broders', so innumerable are the things you want. Do you look inside the case at the rich, fresh puttanesca sauce, bursting with olives, capers, anchovies, garlic, and red peppers, and just crying out for a bruschetta to ennoble or a pasta with which to dance? Or do you look into the back room, where the trays of said fresh pasta await your whim? There's always fettuccine, linguini, or pappardelle noodles just made, or full pasta sheets... More »
For those who crave fresh pasta, the Twin Cities don't offer much in the way of choices: Make it yourself, or head to Broders'. And let's face facts: How often are you going to go to the trouble, when you can so easily find tender and tasty homemade egg, spinach, or herb-and-garlic noodles at this warm, cozy little market, for just $3.95 per pound? While you're at it, pick up some of the tempting accompaniments: fresh Italian sausage, stromboli, cheeses, and the sauces. Could anything be... More »
Please do not forget to take a number when you walk into this snug little shop and café on a Saturday afternoon. Upon entering, you may feel overwhelmed by the scent of the garlic meatballs, the sight of the cheesy pizzas, the sound of the customers shouting out their orders, but for God's sake, take a number, or you'll sink into a private reverie and stand there dreaming forever. Though it can certainly be amusing to eavesdrop on the ambient conversations--old friends who haven't... More »
