Bread Gallery is all the way down south in San Clemente, but don’t mistake its far-away location as proof of its ultimate worth, as this is one of the best bakeries in Orange County. You know you’re at a great bakery when the baker’s name is Gunther. A German bäckerei at the beach? Yes, and the pretzels are top-notch: crusty and tangy on the outside, hot and pillowy inside. Take the pretzel home, heat it up in the oven, and devour it with mustard while pretending people are triple-parking in front of you on South Passyunk. They also use their bread to make top-notch sandwiches, some of the best in South County, and make bread that restaurants across the county use (although they don’t say where they get it from). Can't get to San Clemente? The pretzels are usually available at local farmers' markets, including the Saturday-morning Laguna Beach and Irvine markets.
