Description

Spectacular fruits de mer platters, and French classics like onion soup, pate and escargot lead the list of attractions at this temple of old-fashioned French cooking. Crusty bread, simple wines and French draft beer round out the authentic experience.

  • 2010 | Best Brasserie

"Brasserie" means "brewery," and the folks at Max & Julie's have captured the lively spirit of the iconic French experience here in the heart of Montrose. Dive in with a bowl of Soup à l'Oignon, freshly made foie gras or roasted bone marrow, and then hit up traditional favorites such as the Alsatian sauerkraut dish, choucroute, the steak tartar with frites or the cassoulet. Sunday brunch is extra special, as the kitchen turns out the thinnest and most velvety crepes imaginable.... More »

Owners Laurence and Chris Paul of Café Rabelais fame have managed to create an authentic brasserie experience in the heart of Montrose with their Brasserie Max & Julie. With not too much imagination, you'll be transported to Paris in an instant, and not just by the decor. They have Kronenbourg on tap and an excellent selection of French wines that won't break the bank. The restaurant opened in 2007 has become a sophisticated little place with fantastic food. Upon entering Brasserie Max & Julie (owned by neither Max or Julie but by Chris and Laurence Paul who also own Cafe Rabelais in Rice Village) I am struck I by the comfortable, authentic, intimate atmosphere which allows one to believe for a moment that they are not in the middle of Houston, but instead in a brasserie located within a French village.

The interior of rich scarlet fabrics and bright gold railings enhances the illusion. The menu is creative offering seasonal country French dishes, such as savory pot-au-feu, white duck cassoulet and steak au poivre are both satisfying and authentic while the service is always competent and friendly.

For your main course, you can't go wrong with the steak tartare et frites, the boeuf bourguignon or the cassoulet. Finish with a soufflé. All of these classic dishes are prepared perfectly, and you won't find a more charming place than this one.

The menu could be from Brasserie LIpp, or any other brasserie in Paris. Good selection of traditional dishes (cassoulet, Boeuf Bourgogne, salmon pappillote), also good fish/seafood selections. Good wine selection - found a nice bottle of burgandy (red) for $80 With its location near the museums and Cezanne, makes for a great day in Houston.. Service was excellent. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.
