The Bowery Ballroom is generally regarded as the city's best music venue. It has three floors, three bars, an intimate 550-person capacity, balconies for the mosh-pit-adverse, and status as the most popular destination for rising indie-rockers. It's also the place where "special guests" (such as David Byrne!) drop by, and more established acts (such as Nine Inch Nails!) treat their fans to "secret" shows. While the Ballroom now has a Brooklyn clone (the Music Hall of Williamsburg) with sleeker finishes, swankier bars, and better couches, the original club's homey charm is something that can't be replicated.
Kurt Vile Bowery Ballroom 5/16/13 Kurt Vile is a golden god. We already knew he was a king, at least, but once he took the Bowery Ballroom stage last night in head-to-toe white denim as Violator Jes... More »

It's 10:30 a.m. in Seattle at Sub Pop Records HQ and Mark Arm—the mercurial, spit-slinging singer for proto-grunge legends and original "Loser" poster boys Mudhoney—is about to hit the wor... More »
Free Energy find themselves in a strange new world. A fuzzy, poppy, rock 'n' roll band inspired by '70s acts like Big Star, Thin Lizzy, and The Cars, they grew up on rock. "Paul and I are both from t... More »

Event Review: San Cisco
Caught them during CMJ and I'm excited to see them again at Bowery Ballroom- one of my favorite new bands!
Been here a few times. The sound is incredible and there isn't a bad place to watch the show in the entire place! Tickets often sell out for the big shows so plan ahead.
Instead of freezing your ass off in Times Square, a saner annual tradition has sprung up to ring in the new year--the Patti Smith Group's Bowery Ballroom NYE Shows, a two- or three-night tradition since 1998. Most any show with Smith and her band--including longtime collaborators guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daughtery--is an event, but what makes these shows special is that Smith herself is celebrating her own birthday (December 30), as well as the fact that they're hometown... Besides the fact that butts recently warming its seats belong to the likes of David Bowie and members of the Bouncing Souls, the brass and iron that hold up the upstairs bar at the BOWERY BALLROOM have been through a hell of a lot more than just rock and roll--these structures have been in place since 1929. Though there are just a few seats, you might get lucky enough to snag one and watch a gig in front of you onstage, while the sun sets behind you through the stained glass arch,... More »
I am now going to give away how to get the best seats in the house at every BOWERY BALLROOM show. Take the stairs from the bar that lead to the right side of the stage. As soon as you arrive, squeeze in front of the stage, just a little bit away from the speakers. You are now golden, with an essentially front-row spot, and a perfect view. Now, get outta my way, bitch. More »
Great ventilation system, even better sound system. Never oversold, so never too crowded. Close to subways and Chinese restaurants. Clear sight lines. Clean bathrooms. Two bars, a dark, funky downstairs chill area, and an ornate balcony. I've never had a complaint with the BOWERY BALLROOM, except for that one time last fall when there was a fire alarm and they evacuated everybody, and then later a guy in the balcony spilled beer on my head. But I don't think either of those things were the... More »
Return to childhood bliss and skip up the stairs to the top floor of the Bowery Ballroom. If you can sneak past the hawklike guards hovering over the reserved tables and claim your spitting ground, you're golden! Grab the railings, lean back, and let one fly. Two points for any rocker you splash; triple if you reach the stage. If the vibrations in your throat are louder than the band, you know you're good. More »
