The Boulder Farmers' Market is one of the most popular, and biggest, farmers' market in the state. Twice a week, it features picked-just-that-day produce along with breads, milk, cheeses, pork, beef, lamb, chicken, duck and prepared food, from smoked salmon to chocolate -- all from sellers passionate about their products. And vendors often offer shoppers cooking and planting tips. It's a perfect opportunity to find food that really is locally produced (the rules are very strict), as well as a sense of community unique to Colorado.
The big news at the Boulder Farmers' Market Saturday: Randy and Regan of 2 Rs Farm have strawberries. I restrain myself from doing a celebratory dance around their stand -- which is also heaped with c... More »
Eating local brings different joys and disappointments every year, and there's a big disappointment coming up -- as I learn from farmer John Ellis at the Boulder Farmers' Market Saturday. No apricots ... More »
Some people say the first green shoots of spring have the most chi or energy, while others insist they're particularly cleansing for your system. No matter what the reason, most of us are yearning for... More »

Here's what you get out of shopping at the best and biggest farmers' market in the state: picked-just-that-day produce along with breads, milk, cheeses, pork, beef, lamb, chicken, duck and prepared food from smoked salmon to chocolate; more varieties of eggplant than you'd known existed; sellers passionate about their products, who may offer cooking or planting tips; a way to help local ranchers and farmers survive; the kind of apple you remember eating as a kid; food that really is locally... Frank Silva's no hippie, no rancher-come-lately. He was born on a dairy farm and has been in the cattle business all his life. And you can hear the affection in his voice as he describes how smart his cows are and talks about their temperamental quirks. He mixes the feed himself, and also grazes the animals on pasture. At the spotless family-run abbatoir where his Highland cattle are eventually processed, music plays to keep the animals calm. Silva's can provide bone marrow and particular... More »
Forget all the pious exhortations to eat local, organic, seasonal. They're all real enough, but they're not the reason we eagerly anticipate the opening of the Boulder County Farmers' Market in early April and visit faithfully, week after week, as the offerings change from tender lettuce and spinach to the corn, eggplants and tomatoes of full summer, and then the September apples, pears and hard-shelled squashes that push us into an orgy of freezing, canning and storage. Produce isn't the... More »
Fresh seasonal fruit and veggies, flowers, breads, dips etc. I love this type of shopping experience, 'cos it's so social and you meet some really friendly folk. I wish all of my shopping could be like this, plus, you're outdoors enjoying the sunshine and jazz in the background!
