There are steakhouses for celebrating business deals, steakhouses for wooing lovers and steakhouses where the only imperative is to enjoy a good plate of quality red meat. Bob's Steak and Chop Shop falls in the latter category. While parties flock to this popular Oak Lawn restaurant, there are few better local spots for a single eater to sidle up to the bar, drink a strong martini and eat beef. The flavorful steaks all come with a massive peeled-and-parsley-ed carrot, but the potato's left to the diner's discretion. Go with the home fries submerged in peppercorn gravy, a sufficient excuse for starting with a mere half-portion of the brawny blue cheese salad.
If you look closely you can see them: the telltale shards of ice floating on the surface of your martini at Bob's Steak and Chop House on Lemmon Avenue. The bar is dim and dark, and martinis are the p... More »
Men's Health magazine has set out to find the nation's most manly restaurant. Their website listed a seemingly arbitrary selection of eateries around the country and asked what makes for many eating. ... More »
No wonder people crowd into Hooters. It has a pert name, firm menu, low-cut prices and a revealing window to the kitchen. We can't think of anything else necessary for success in the service industry. Oh, yeah. There is one more thing:... More »
Somewhere in the dark corridors, behind the wood paneling, beyond the rows of mirrors framed in wood or brass, Bob's Steak and Chop House must have hidden a couple of barrels of dining room testosterone. You can see the effects of hormonal... More »
What is it about steak that seems to turn this town into a one-note culinary tuba? It's cliché to say that every time you turn around there's another steakhouse. The mystery is where all these steak houses are getting their steaks. Steers are not... More »
A true grill master knows exactly how to make his favorite steak: a blazing hot grill and just the right amount of seasoning for a crispy sear and a bloody center. But even on his best day, a grill master is humbled by the Cote de Boeuf (bone-in rib-eye) at Bob's Steak and Chop House. Perhaps it's because the steaks at Bob's are aged for 28 days before cooking, or because the local chain has been making perfect steaks for nearly 20 years. That fact, coupled with the great wine selection and... More »

Steak. Not just any steak. Bob's steak. USDA prime steak, steak as thick as the bull in a campaign speech. Ask anyone anywhere in Dallas (who doesn't believe his great-grandparent has come back as a steer) who has the best steak, and he'll reflexively spit out Bob's. The flavor is rich. The meat is juicy. Tough gristle has been evacuated. The texture is buttery. The degree of doneness is perfect. And if that weren't enough, Bob throws in a potato and a glazed carrot for no extra charge,... More »
Family-owned since its beginning, This Is It Soul Food is all about big, hefty servings of done-right down-home cooking. Back when it opened in 1959, a meal cost 89 cents. It's a bit more these days, but still more than reasonable. Now $10 will get you a plateful of fried catfish, smothered pork chops, barbecue ribs or oxtails and more (specials change daily). You'll also get three heaping servings of greens, mac and cheese, white rice, yams, green beans or chitterlings and hot cornbread. Lunch crowds are big (expect a line between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.), and include business people from downtown, local celebs from the African-American community, blue-collar workers and just plain old regular hungry folks. When you're in the mood for soul food, This Is It!
If you want a steak in Dallas, this is one of two places to go. Be prepared to drop some money, but the food is completely worth it and the ambiance is old school steak house.
This is my favorite restaurant in Dallas, recommended to me by my old friend (and local ABC film critic) Gary Cogill. It's classic steakhouse fare done perfectly - get the onion rings and shrimp three ways for the table, then have a salad (caesar or spinach with bacon) - and then move on to the best steak you have ever eaten. I kid you not, this Texas beef is so tender, you can cut it with a fork. Share some sides of creamed spinach, asparagus with garlic and potatoes however you want them. If you can jam in any more food after finishing all that and some great red wine, get the brownie sundae for your party to share. A classy spot for a date or dinner with friends or colleagues. If you're in town alone, still go and eat at the bar - you'll be sure to make friends.
