I've been a fan of Bob's for several years; but I can't tell much difference between Bob's and Whole Foods; and when WF has sales it does seem to be a better choice. But both are better than anything else I've found in the metro area.
Blast freezing, next-day air, the rapid pace of globalization: These days it's easy to take the availability of seafood for granted, even here in St. Louis, a loooooooong ways away from the nearest ocean. Heck, sushi is so commonplace, it probably won't be long before some Americans start thinking we invented the stuff. Which is why this category's nearly perennial winner, Bob's Seafood, remains so important. Whether wholesaling fish to your favorite area restaurant (and, yeah, whatever your favorite area restaurant is, chances are Bob's is its vendor) or selling you shrimp, tuna, salmon, oysters, softshell crabs, lobsters, crawdads, scallops or whatever happens to be the best catch of the day, Bob's Seafood offers a personal touch and the comfort of knowing where in this ever-expanding global market your fish flew in from.
Bob and Barb Mepham have been selling fresh fish in University City for more than three decades, first in the Market in the Loop, from the back of a pickup Bob drove down each week to Grand Isle, Loui... More »
Nearly a month after the explosion that sunk the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, killing several workers, oil continues to gush into the Gulf of Mexico. While the federal government and BP struggle to... More »
According to an old Japanese proverb, "A frog in a well does not know of the great sea." Here in 100 percent ocean-free St. Louis, it's hard to know the great sea and its delicious culinary treasures, which is why we are so grateful that we have Bob's Seafood to broaden our horizons. What with the miracle of modern shipping, Bob's receives, processes and sells -- retail! -- fresh fish that less than 24 hours prior were, ya know, knowing the great sea. Nearly 200 local restaurants... More »
In Alaska there's an old folk song called "Fish Head Stew." You can probably guess what that's about, and given the 49th state's fish-rich status, it's hardly surprising that they'd have a song about chomping down on fish heads, in stew or otherwise. Here in good ol' landlocked Missourah, not so much. (We're more likely to be found singing tunes about Provel around the campfire.) At Bob's Seafood, however, fish head stew can become a reality, what with all the sea creatures lying about on... More »
For better or for worse, the days when Midwesterners in love with seafood were out of luck are long gone. Thanks to the wonders of modern-day shipping, fish are hauled in and shipped around the globe at record speeds; sometimes literally a day out of the water. And in St. Louis, there's no fresher place for fresh seafood than Bob's Seafood. The selection's ample, the staff's quick and helpful, the prices are more than competitive, and the quality is tip-top. While we've got your attention,... More »

Good thing Bob's Seafood up and moved since last year's "Best of St. Louis" issue--at least we have something new to say about the place. A perennial leader in this category, Bob's no longer lives in the Market in the Loop. The defection was tragic for those of us who used to walk over there from the office, order a half-pound of sliced raw tuna and call it lunch. But it's now located on Olive Boulevard just east of I-170, in a nice big storefront. Nothing much else has changed, however.... More »
People look at us like we're crazy when we tell them that sometimes, we like to have raw fish for lunch. Not sashimi, mind you; not a prepared plate of fish with wasabi and whatnot at a Japanese restaurant. We mean a half-pound of bluefin or Alaskan king salmon, or sometimes scallops, which we ask the always-friendly folks behind the counter at Bob's to slice up for us, and which we eat with our bare hands, straight out of the plastic bag, on our way back to the office. That, friends, is the... More »
It all boils down to freshness -- and variety, variety, variety. That explains why about 90 local restaurants procure their fresh fish from Bob and Barbara Mepham's little store, tucked away in University City's Market in the Loop. The world has gotten smaller since the advent of overnight shipping. Fish caught in the Baltic Sea off Denmark can show up in a fishmonger's case the next day and on your table that night. Lobster arrives fast and fresh -- and they'll steam one for you if you... More »
It's no tale, ha-ha-ha, that Bob's is a great place to find the best fish and seafood in this area. Bob's, which has been in business 24 years at the Market in the Loop, deals fish and seafood to about 100 area restaurants, including the Blue Water Grill. You can find the following underwater creatures at owner Bob Mepham's itsy shop: salmon, tuna, trout, striped bass, sea bass, halibut, shark, skate, tilapia, snapper, swordfish, mahi mahi, wahoo, grouper, escolar, amberjack, cobia, black...
