Vince Valenza has harmoniously blended his two greatest loves -- the restaurant biz and the blues -- in this cute, corner-storefront deli, where the walls are riddled with concert posters, album covers and photos (look for the shot of Valenza from his club-gigging days with music buddy Pennsylvania Slim). Aside from a "soup of the day" and a couple of salads, we're talking all sandwiches, all the time. But there's no reason to sing the blues about the Italian salsiccia po'-boy or what just might be the biggest and best muffaletta this side of the Big Easy. On Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons, some of the city's best musicians take to the tiny stage at Blues City and transform the south-city haunt into a jumpin' blues venue. It's a great place to grab a quick bite, kick back with a cold beer and soak up some quality local music.
Gut Check loves us a day at the ballpark. And Gut Check loves us some ballpark food. Nachos? Bratwurst? Soft pretzels? Pretty much anything shellacked with orange cheese product? Yes, please. We ain't... More »
Warning: show-going can be bad for your health. I type this with watery eyes, a sore head and throat, and a forever-runny, impossible-to-breathe-out-of nose. I suppose all that putzing around in the r... More »

Whoa, it's a new year, and change is weird. I'm still getting used to working at this office. This week, I've been strategically re-adjusting the angle of this side view mirror set up on my soon-to-be... More »
The office has been hectic lately. Next week is our big Best Of St. Louis issue. Things have occasionally gotten ugly; the "motherfuckers" are flying with unusual frequency, weary staffers are resorti... More »
The food is GREAT! The music is too, but in a limited space, it can be VERY loud at times, especially on young ears (just a warning). Most people never think about how loud sound might affect young virgin ears. It can be devastating to them. Just want you to think about it...

Awesome, original sandwiches!
For six years now, Blues City Deli has attracted St. Louisans to its Benton Park address: They crowd the entrance and sometimes even the sidewalk, waiting to order, and then they crowd the tables, elbow to elbow as they tear open the butcher paper in which their sandwiches are wrapped. There are twenty sandwiches, plus specials, and you can't go wrong with any single one of them. The signature is the muffuletta, a fat stack of ham, salami and mortadella with provolone and mozzarella cheese,... More »
If you're so fancy that you swear by starting the weekend with some oontz-oontz at nine on a Saturday night, do yourself a favor and stop reading. Only hoosiers with bona fides will want the scoop on the city's best midday Saturday street party. Every week at 11:30 a.m. at the corner of McNair Avenue and Victor Street in Benton Park, Blues City Deli owner Vince Valenza and his sons commence serving up Abita beer and greasy hoagies -- be they pulled pork, sloppy roast beef or... Located in still-flowering Benton Park, Blues City Deli acts as a kind of gustatory crossroads for the varying strains of sandwich styles. New Orleans-style po' boys sidle up to Memphis BBQ plates, and the Italian sandwiches rival anything found on the Hill. All these are superb, but the standout is the Veno, which sets a new standard for excellence even in this red meat-loving town. First of all, there is none of that cold-cut, deli-style roast beef here -- the roast beef is cooked and... More »
