Description

The home base for local impresario extraordinaire Joe Edwards and his many, many collections of pop-culture artifacts, Blueberry Hill is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. The building spans an entire block, housing a dart room as well as two separate downstairs venues: the Elvis Room and the Duck Room, which many a local and national touring act has packed. Rock 'n' roll godfather and St. Louis native Chuck Berry even makes monthly appearances. (The venue is named for his famous duck walk.) As for the food, burgers are king here. These are relatively restrained by today's Thickburger standards, simply grilled and, with a cold beer and a side of fried onion rings or spicy Buffalo fries, close to the perfect meal. The menu also includes many sandwiches, fish and chips and several vegetarian and vegan dishes. The Gentry, a cup of soup served with a grilled-cheese sandwich, is one of the restaurant's best-kept secrets.

There's some things you might enjoy there, if you get sucked into pop culture B.S. Otherwise, it's just overrated, over priced hyped up nothing. And the hamburger SUCKS! I have no idea how it EVER got on any best of list....

  • 2012 | Best Live Sound Engineer

Ask any sound engineer worth his faders, and he or she will tell you: Garbage in, garbage out. But a soundman like Pancho, the veteran engineer who works many of the Duck Room's high-profile shows and who can handle any lineup of norteño bands in and around Cherokee Street, understands how to make a band sound "as good as the record." Pancho, born Wilbert Vincent Lichtenberg Jr., isn't fronting. He's been running sound in and around St. Louis since the '70s and even honed his chops on... More »

  • 2010 | Best Place to Play Darts

There are few pleasures simpler and more enjoyable than rounding up a few friends, a few beers and a whole lot of small, sharp objects. We're referring, of course, to playing darts. We haven't found a better spot to play than Blueberry Hill -- it's open every day of the year on famed Delmar Boulevard, a dart room big enough for you and all your buddies to have a good time with a wide selection of deep-fried food to go with it. Blueberry Hill even offers you the (slim) chance to convince... More »

  • 2007 | Best Hot Dog

Oh, the poor, derided hot dog! Once celebrated at the backyard barbecue, the frankfurter has been abandoned by those who used to love its salty meatiness, and it has been relegated to the kids' table. No fair! You need to reclaim the hot dog, and ordering the $6.25 all-beef Sweetheart at Blueberry Hill is the perfect way to get back on the bun, so to speak. For starters, this 'dog is huge! And it's split in half lengthwise, so when it's grilled, it absorbs maximum flavor. Decked as it is... More »

  • 2007 | Best Hip-Hop Night

Integrity isn't so much a place to dance and see a show as it is a networking tool. Sure, scene heavyweights Finsta and Tech Supreme make certain the night's performance is dope, and DJ Trackstar's playlists are always on point, but if you want to make it in the game in St. Louis, you best be seen at Integrity every Saturday. A producer with a hot new beat? Find out if it even makes the cut in the Battle of the Beats. Got the gift of gab? See if your freestyle can hold the open mic. "It's... More »

  • 2006 | Best Place to Play Darts

Darts at Blueberry Hill is a no-brainer. One night long ago, we happened into a south-city dive that timelessness forgot. Meaning: Though the place was run-down and weathered (which can make for a fantastic watering hole), the owners of this one had decided to spruce things up in all the wrong ways--with an Internet jukebox and three arcade-size electronic dart boards. Not only did this make for ugly and crass decor, but because the dart boards were crowded in here and there, in close p... More »

  • 2005 | Best Place to Play Darts

On his deathbed, Scilurus offered a bundle of darts to each of his 80 sons. He bade them break them. When all refused, the Greek strongman drew out one dart at a time, snapping them between his fingers. The lesson? If his sons held together, they stayed strong; if divided, they were weak. Or at least so says Plutarch. These days darts don't see a lot of action by way of lessons learned -- except at Blueberry Hill. Gaze up in the cavernous dart room to get plenty of inspiration from champs... More »

  • 2003 | Best Jukebox

First-time users of the famed jukebox at Blueberry Hill might get confused. Intimidated, even. The CD covers with the track and album numbers aren't inside the box, where you push the little arrow buttons to flip through until you find what you want. There's no way the thousands of CDs available here could be represented inside that little window. Instead, there's a big black three-ring binder on a table next to the box, attached to a kind of lectern like a holy book in a church. (You may... More »

  • 2003 | Best Service in a Restaurant

You were thinking Tony's or Giovanni's for this category. Well, while we wholeheartedly coo over the levels of attentiveness and care at those two fine eateries -- see "Best Restaurant When Someone Else Pays" and "Best Italian Restaurant (Not Cheap)," respectively -- time and again the help at Blueberry Hill manages to be surprisingly professional, adept, adroit and chummy even though the waiters and waitresses are all young and by no means career servers. They might not look the part, but... More »

  • 2000 | Best Bar/Nightclub

It almost goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: There's just not a better place to hang out in St .Louis, for various and sundry reasons, than Blueberry Hill. But let's tick a few of them off: They've got great food, including world-class burgers; a wide array of beers; and ambiance -- in the form of bar owner Joe Edwards' lifelong obsession with collecting records, posters, comic books, satyr statues, you name it -- that's second to none. You can go there to play darts, pinball and... More »
