Located on the second floor of the Hotel Palomar at CityScape in downtown Phoenix, this true, urban gathering place, like its contemporary American fare, successfully blends sophistication and familiarity along with a solid selection of signature cocktails. Helmed by chef Stephen Jones, the restaurant’s dishes, with a focus on local ingredients, are available as small plates or in two sizes -- perfect for sharing or to mix-and-match. Start with crispy tater tots with smoked bacon or a flatbread of duck confit then move on to heartier dishes such as Jones’ version of the Mexican stew pozole, grilled rainbow trout, or the decidedly unique Kentucky fried quail. A bustling bar of reclaimed wood and mirrors, floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining area, and an outdoor patio make it easy to enjoy the city along with the food and drink.

Tried the Blue Hound last Friday for their lunch special - 2 appetizers, a full salad and full sandwich plate for two to share, $11 each. The garden salad and chicken salad sandwich were pretty standard, but the tater tot appetizer - AMAZING. I can't even describe what the taste was like, but there was definitely bacon involved. I would go back and just munch on those with a few beers or cocktails. Also, the atmosphere is really swanky and industrial, which I liked - what a downtown hotel bar should feel like.
My friend & I decided to see what was happening in the city on a sunny Sunday afteroon--absolutely nothing--until we stumbled upon The Blue Hound
Kitchen. We sat at the bar, ordered drinks, sope and chatted with the two pleasant bartenders. The beer was great on a hot summer afternoon, however, the app. was not. The masa was dry with a chunk of pork and a few dry strands of onion; carmalized and moist--not. We both ordered flatbreads. Mine, squash blossom & zucchini was bland and tasteless; hers, the sausage, was actually burnt! She returned it only to receive another that was more than charred on the bottom. The roasted beet salad, tasted like nothing more than canned beets, not freshly roasted beets--a world of difference between the two.
We were sssssssoooooooo disappointed in our meal so much so that I would never return nor recommend. Hate to be so negative but this quality will never sustain this business.
Thanks to this "contemporary gastro-lounge" headed up by 32-year-old chef Stephen Jones, downtown denizens not only have a stylish spot for lunch, they also (gasp!) have a reason to visit CityScape. Located on the second floor inside the new Hotel Palomar, the city lunch-going set can enjoy familiar and flavorful favorites from a selection of salads, sandwiches, and flatbreads. (Hint: Get the duck confit with zesty pickled kumquats.) Plus, since a lot of the grub is offered in two sizes,... More »
Smart, sassy, super-cute, and a master of her cocktail craft, Shel Bourdon is the gal behind the outstanding cocktail menu at CityScape's Blue Hound Kitchen at the Palomar Hotel. The 24-year-old mixologist and lead bartender created the restaurant's entire menu of handcrafted cocktails that are classic, down-to-earth, and, most important, drinkable. The California transplant's creations are the perfect complement to executive chef Stephen Jones' exquisite comfort food, and Shel or one of her... More »
