Description

This no-frills, faux-wood-decorated Potrero Hill bar looks like most prototypical neighborhood joints, but if you like your beer cold, your bartenders sassy, and sports on TV, then this is the place for you. Mostly filled with locals and blue-collar workers - it's not the hippest crowd, but it's certainly a friendly one - Blooms never gets too busy. And it does have a hidden gem: the outdoor patio boasts some of the best views in S.F., although there's no telling when that sassy bartender will open it up for use.

  • 2010 | Best Old S.F. Pub

The Dashiell Hammett days that saw this bar first open its doors in the 1930s are long gone, but there's more than a taste of film noir fog left at Bloom's, perched as it is below a window advertising private investigator services on the main drag of one of San Francisco's old-time working-class neighborhoods. Bloom's Saloon 1318 18th St. (at Missouri), 552-6707 As spring heats up, a young person's mind turns to ... beer, of course, preferably drunk outside. If you're tired of waiting in line at Zeitgeist with all the other sun-and-suds worshippers, head on over to this distinctively tiled Potrero Hill watering hole with stupendous views of the bay, the Bay Bridge, and downtown San Francisco decked out in sunny splendor. Potrero Hill is one of those great neighborhoods that feel like a... More »

  • 2004 | Best View-With-a-Drink

Located on a pleasant Potrero Hill dining and shopping street, Bloom's boasts a distinctive vintage glass-brick facade, but cute as that is, it doesn't suggest the wonders revealed behind it. We're not talking about the neighborhood camaraderie, the noteworthy beer selection, the heated atmosphere during a Giants or 49ers game. We're talking about what lies beneath: all of San Francisco, exposed in a sweeping, glorious, utterly irresistible panorama. It's the kind of thrilling surprise that... More »

Gloomy Bloom’s brings out the cynic

    | Wed, September 30, 2009

There comes a time in everyone's life when you try to be less cynical. Less sarcastic. Less glass-half-empty. Less of a douche. For one thing, it takes a lot of energy to constantly be hatin' on everything. Also, you can end up like Scrooge, with ... More »
