Barilla Pasta Baron Puts Anti-Gay Foot in Mouth
Remember all the hubbub that occurred last year when Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy made some pretty atrocious anti-gay comments on a radio show? Protests and pissed-off people ensued; now, yet another high-ranking food person has put his proverbial foot in his mouth on the topic of homosexuality.
Barilla pasta chairman Guido Barilla told an Italian radio station last week, "I would never do (a commercial) with a homosexual family, not for lack of respect but because we don't agree with them. Ours is a classic family where the woman plays a fundamental role."
So Barilla would never do a commercial with a homosexual familly, but interestingly enough, the pasta mega-corp apparently hired former "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" star Ted Allen for a PR campaign back in the early 2000s, and even sponsored him at events as recently as 2011, according to The Braiser. Allen intends to marry his partner later this year, which The Braiser points out could lead to some rather um, awkward situations for Barilla.
So how to show Barilla that you're pissed off, other than simply boycotting and buying a different brand of pasta? The LA Weekly's Laura Shunk has some suggestions:
1) "Eat some gay pasta shapes. Farfalle, penne, fagottini--ever notice that pasta itself is kind of gay?"
2) "Go to Olive Garden. Srsly! According to the Human Rights Campaign, Darden Restaurants, Olive Garden's parent company, has one of the best gay-friendly corporate cultures in the country."
