Description

Nestled among the state streets of Tower Grove South, this south-side pizza joint consistently stays busy, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Set up like an old-school pizzeria, with a bar along the wall and wooden tables throughout the dining room, Black Thorn is straightforward with its offerings. Pizzas can be ordered either thin or pan, but their most notable pie is the deep-dish, cheese-loaded Chicago-style. Expect to wait awhile, regardless of the amount of empty or full tables for this dough, cheese and spicy-sauced meal. Salad choices include house, Caesar or Cobb.

Excellent pizza, fun place. Be ready to wait for over an hour for a deep dish(there's plenty of bar games to play while you wait)

  • 2009 | Best Pizza (Thick Crust)

Fans of the Black Thorn Pub know there are two rules to enjoying the Tower Grove South joint's incredible deep-dish pizza: 1) leave yourself plenty of time; and 2) listen very carefully. The first rule is pretty obvious. Deep-dish pizza takes time to cook; add in the crowds who throng this relatively small pub and you could be waiting an hour or more. Those crowds explain the second rule. When your pizza is ready, the staff announces it over an intercom. Your name can be hard to hear over... More »

  • 2005 | Best Pizza (Thick Crust)

Why do we bother with this category every year? Maybe it's to take into account the scant possibility that some other pizza joint might come along with a thick-crust that can top the phantasmagoria that is a Chicago-style Black Thorn pie. Pizza this dense, this formidable, this architecturally mind-blowing, this stacked with blue-collar toppings doesn't grow on trees. We're talking pizza so sturdy you could strap a pair of slices on your feet and use them as shoes. Once again, Black Thorn,... More »

  • 2004 | Best Pizza (Thick Crust)

No matter that it's known as "Chicago-style"; the Black Thorn Pub's thick-crust pie is like the Gateway Arch of pizzas. It is taller than you could have imagined, seeing it with your own two eyes for the first time, and it is famous around these parts. With a cheese-stuffed crust, a spicy, robust, deep-red tomato sauce and a proudly un-frou-frou choice of toppings (pepperoni, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, onions, garlic, black olives, green peppers), it's also absurdly delicious. • 2001 | Best Place To See Rock Chicks Working

Some may call the Black Thorn Pub home simply because it's their neighborhood bar, and a comfortable and friendly bar it is. A wider circle seeks it out because it makes some of the finest pizza on the South Side, and it truly is marvelous pizza. Others, though, are drawn to the modest pub by the magnetic pull of rock & roll. With members of the Fantasy Four, Fred's Variety Group and Ouija manning the bar, the Black Thorn Pub has become the best place to see some of St. Louis' finest female... More »
