A small (three locations, with four more on the way), higher-end national chain, BlackFinn American Grille wants to offer something for everyone, from chicken tenders to crab cakes, fish and chips to Chilean sea bass. Stick to the basic items. Those fish and chips bring tender slabs of haddock in a crisp jacket of deep-fried batter; the fried calamari are pretty good, as is a soft pretzel appetizer. More complicated dishes like shrimp and grits and a "herb-rubbed campfire steak" (an overly salty rib eye) don't justify the $20-and-up price tags.
With the weekend creeping closer, we here at Gut Check realize we need to make plans for Super Bowl Sunday -- specifically, what will we be eating and drinking, and where? From all-you-can-eat nacho a... More »

BlackFinn American Grille serves an appetizer called "Ying-Yang Shrimp." This provocatively titled starter is described on the menu as "crispy shrimp, sweet and spicy Asian sauce." Here I am, blithely assuming the name is an unfortunate typo, and... More »

THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE!!! Our dinner club made reservations several weeks in advance. When we tried to confirm the reservation, it took two weeks for someone call us back. Upon our arrival, the "Assistant General Manager" was very nasty and told us that she would only seat us when the entire party of 15 arrived--and if everyone did not arrive within 15 minutes of the reservation, she would seat other people at our table. We understand that a lot of restaurants operate by this policy--and they inform you of that upon making your reservation. Blackfinn did not! The Assistant Manager's attitude was rude and unprofessional. Our waiter was not much better He was unfriendly and the service was very slow. We were seated at 7:15 and our food didn't arrive until 8:15. It took our waiter 30 minutes to bring the check. How was the food?? Luke warm and mediocre at best. Fortunately, our dinner club members are good natured and a lot of fun to dine with or the entire dining experience would have been a disaster!
Unfortuntely I tried BlackFinn twice to give them the benefit of the doubt and the food was present poorly and tasted terrible both times. I will never return.
