Black Iris

The current crop of Fort Greene restaurants is an uneven lot, trying to be as trendy and mediocre as Smith Street but not quite succeeding. One of our favorites in the region for either a snack or a full meal is Black Iris, with a name like a Raymond Chandler novel. This souk-like Jordanian spot excels at crumbly lamb sausage and outsize balls of falafel, well browned on the outside, dense and herby within. Mezze and entrées come with homemade pit's, which are also transformed into "pitzas." Bring your own wine or beer.
