Located in the Vandora Theater building along Cherokee Street, just west of Jefferson Avenue, Black Bear Bakery has been baking organic, whole-grain breads and bagels, cookies and cakes, and pies and pastries since 1998. The worker-owned and -operated shop also serves a neighborhood brunch on Saturdays featuring an assortment of morning and midday favorites such as buckwheat pancakes, eggs, quiches and various vegetarian and vegan items. Their café hours change on occasion, so it is not a bad idea to call ahead before heading out to eat. Lunch items include vegetarian entrées, such as a tempeh Rueben with swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing, and a vegetarian muffaletta with vegetarian sausage, veggies and flavored cream cheese on a muffaletta roll.

A good bagel is like a New Yorker: thick-skinned, but with a soft, yielding interior that explains a tendency to consistently vote Democrat in presidential elections. A good bagel is no-nonsense. It doesn't need any of those froufrou streusel toppings, cloyingly sweet chocolate chips or seasonal variants that are a desperate cry for attention; a good bagel is like a worn leather jacket, a pair of Converse All Stars, the perfect pair of jeans. Until recently a good bagel was hard to find in... More »
Vegans dreamin' of a steamin' weekend feast would do well to head toward Cherokee Street for the neighborhood brunch at Black Bear Bakery. Each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the bakery's staff -- which collectively owns and operates the establishment -- serves up French toast, egg casserole, biscuits, mushroom gravy and homemade apple butter for the vegetarians. But vegans have options too: potatoes (fried and seasoned); kale or collards (sautéed and steamed), hearty... More »
Black Bear Bakery is a collective, something we like to see in this increasingly corporatized world, where even a loaf of damn French bread (or is it now Freedom bread?) baked in California and sold in supermarkets here is packaged to look like it came from a local hearth. And because Black Bear is a collective of six people, no one person can make a decision to, say, dress up the place and add an espresso bar with wireless Internet service. They just make good bread, and a few pastries and... More »
