Located in north downtown, Bitterman's Market Square Bar & Grill is a relaxed restaurant featuring burgers, salads and beer. The restaurant claims to have captured the ambiance of a Chicago or Philadelphia-style neighborhood bar, then given it a Texas twist with menu items like quesadillas and fajita salad. Television stationed throughout the restaurant allow diners to watch the game, and free wireless internet is available. The large back patio - an anomaly downtown - makes Bitterman's a popular choice for after-work happy hours.
Imagine a bar run by Houston's best bartenders and mixologists where 100 percent of the proceeds would be donated to a local charity at the end of each month. It's not just a wild-eyed fantasy; it's a... More »
There are three keys to making a superb cheese steak. First, shave the beef until you can see through it. Then ensure that the onions and peppers are well caramelized and the mozzarella well melted. And finally, slather it all onto a crusty roll.... More »
I would frequent this place for lunch two or three years back, when working in a hotel downtown. The burger was generally great and i would often have a couple stellas to accompany the succulence. It took me a couple visits before i ventured out to the patio. To my surprise there lye a perfect little nook to disappear in. Small and quaint, a real gem, surrounded by four bearing walls of four different buildings and open air four stories above. In this space you can forget all about the office or any work environment you deal with on your day to day. Upon my recent return to Houston, I have visited with my brother and found Market Square to still be that place. If you work downtown do plan a lunch there. you will find it a nice escape.
This consistently unassailable downtown watering hole-cum-burger joint has a secret weapon, ambience-wise: If it's getting too crowded inside, a quick hustle through the unassuming back door lands you in the equivalent of a medieval fairyland. Surrounded by mesmerizingly high walls covered with creeping vines and intricate molding, entering this courtyard is like stepping into a three-dimensional coffee-table book, where conversation flows like the beer that somehow magically tastes even better. The explosion of downtown drinking establishments provides crowds with more choices than ever for the forays into the central city: disco, rock, retro, high-dollar, lowbrow, jazz, freak/geek/sleek and so on. And that makes the other option -- none of the above -- that much more valuable for visitors and regulars alike. Market Square Bar & Grill serves as a needed rest stop of sorts for any ultimate destination downtown. The place is centrally located. It a well-stocked bar and pours a good... More »
The burgers at this downtown watering hole are the real deal: a half-pound handmade patty of 80 percent lean ground chuck that is never frozen and never more than two days old. The most popular burger at Market Square is the blue-cheese burger, but the restaurant also offers a bacon cheeseburger, Canadian bacon cheeseburger, a regular cheeseburger and a portobello mushroom burger, the McCool. Prices range from $5.75 to $6.75, but they're well worth it. More »
