From the minty-fresh, funky-Fifties dining area to the healthy, hand-hewn foods dished up from behind the cafeteria line, there's nothing about this Seward coffee shop and casual restaurant that isn't smart. Intelligent. Well-considered. Insightful, even. It's a place that embodies the idea that a healthy meal in a peaceful setting contributes significantly to serenity, and it's especially so in the summer, when you can take your pizzas, soups, sandwiches, and such out to one of the picnic tables and meditate on the blooming boulevard gardens all through the quiet neighborhood.
It may be the official state pie of Florida, but here in Minnesota there is one iconic restaurant that has managed to produce a perfect Key lime pie. It's simultaneously so splendidly sour and subtly ... More »

These days, it's great that a chef knows where the food comes from, but better yet if he's got some real earth under his fingernails. Chef Marshall Paulsen isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. He and Birchwood Cafe owner Tracy Singleton are wholly committed to local, sustainable agriculture. Singleton works with area farms on many levels. Birchwood Cafe is a pickup spot for CSAs and a host of film screenings, and it serves delicious food that will please the most ethical of eaters. Whether... More »
A clean, well-lighted place, the Birchwood Café was fashioned from an old neighborhood creamery in the heart of Seward. Drawing in area residents--artists, students, entrepreneurs, moms, teachers--it serves up delicious and humble mostly vegetarian food at modest prices. The menu is so thoughtful and creative it appeals to carnivores and vegans alike. Those unbelievably buttery, crumbly scones and tender muffins are made for drawn-out morning coffee and the newspaper. You can also... More »
What makes the Birchwood stand out in a city lousy with neighborhood cafés is attention to detail. The dried-cherry scones contain cornmeal, which somehow seems to make them moist, yet grainy in a very pleasant way. The coconut macaroons are exactly the right kind of chewy. The peach cobbler is neither too sweet nor too mushy, and the key-lime pie delivers exactly the proper amount of pucker. Most days this mostly vegetarian Seward favorite offers two individual-pizza selections in... More »
Being a vegetarian in the Twin Cities requires a lot of hard work, constant vigilance, and a good dose of paranoia: Some restaurateurs simply don't seem to believe that there are people who don't want chicken in their food. But there's no need to be defensive at the Birchwood. Just sit back in the minty-fresh Fifties décor and munch happily as plate after plate of zesty salads, interesting specials like chickpea croquettes on a summer-squash sauté, or vegetarian pizzas whiz...
