Description

Only its atypical look - self-consciously (and, at this point, rather dated) industrial-chic, instead of classic prefab container - would keep this kid-friendly eatery off a list of ultimate American diners. Otherwise, everything is as a true diner oughta be: belly-busting portions, with single items typically serving two to four people; proletarian prices (most dishes are less than ten bucks; only a few are more than $15); late hours; and breakfast anytime. The timeless comfort food is all house-made from scratch -- even the thick potato chips and spicy ketchup -- and features with some sexy upgrades: for instance, a "Pink Daddy Mack" burger with better beef and a brioche bun; imaginative multicultural salads; elegant crunchy/creamy polenta fries, as well as the normal sort; witty daily-changing TV dinners, served in six-compartment stainless-steel trays. Big Pink is a diner with benefits.

  • 2011 | Best Restaurateur

First he opened the eclectic Nemo at Collins Avenue and First Street in South Beach. Then came the hip Big Pink diner across the street and up the block. Both were huge hits, but Myles Chefetz was just getting started. Next was Shoji Sushi, next door to Nemo, and then, just more than a dozen years ago, he hit the gastronomic grand slam with Prime One Twelve on Ocean Drive, which not only redefined the modern steak house but also has been one of the top-grossing restaurants in the nation for... • 2004 | BEST DINER

Big Pink doesn't look like a diner, but the menu contains all the comfort-food classics you'd find (or hope to find) in a world-class diner, even if Big Pink's versions are definitely more Reform than Orthodox. From a list of hefty ten-ounce burgers, the upgraded Big Mac (called the Pink Daddy Mack) is two beef patties, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and pink sauce on a homemade brioche bun. Fries are hand cut, and you can get sweet-potato or polenta fries as well as standard potato -- with... More »

  • 2003 | BEST RESTAURANT FOR KIDS

With a menu of a size that befits its name, Big Pink should be able to satisfy the whims of the most finicky of progeny. Its diner-inspired creations come in gargantuan portions, so you can a) throw junior some scraps off your own plate, b) spare yourself a night's cooking by taking home a doggie bag, or c) order one of the kids' sized options. You may be able to expand their culinary horizons, at least as far as fries are concerned, with Big Pink's scrumptious sweet potato version or the... More »

  • 2002 | BEST TV DINNER

To most people "comfort food" means something that's reassuring because it's what we ate when we were kids. Oddly, though, most restaurants' idea of comfort food is meat loaf. How many modern moms made meat loaf TV dinners are more like it. Why were these especially comforting For one thing they were served in conveniently compartmentalized trays that kept sauces and juices and flavors separated. For another they became associated with an indulgent adolescent pleasure: zoning out in front... More »
