This hole-in-the-wall joint brings authentic, southern-style BBQ--thought by many to be the best in the Twin Cities--to University Avenue. In the spot formerly occupied by West Indies Soul, something miraculous occurs as ordinary beef and pork are transformed into heavenly morsels, tender and moist, with just the right amount of char. Having been in the business for 25 years, owners Ron Whyte, Bob Edmond, and Gene "Big Daddy" Sampson know their 'cue, so if you see smoke billowing into the air from the oil-drum cooker in the back, you'd better stop the car. The menu is simple: chicken and ribs or rib tips--beef or pork--with sides of house-made collard greens, slaw, baked beans, or potato salad. Call ahead and order the "Flintstone" ribs for a caveman/woman style feast. Takeout only.
There's something so simple, so comforting in great barbecue. All it takes is time, patience, and often an unsung cut of meat. Yet great barbecue is truly a hard-to-master bit of culinary artistry. They have moved their operation up from a parking lot to the gleaming, sweet little spot they now occupy on University and... More »
Who's your daddy? Twin Citians are lucky enough to have three--Ron Whyte, Bob Edmond, and Gene Sampson, owners of Big Daddy's BBQ in the heart of Frogtown. The wood fire is kept in a separate compartment from the meat, and the heat and smoke are vented in so that the meat takes on the flavor of the wood. The daddies split hairs, moving the wood forward and backward ever... More »
Figured you'd see Aquavit--or, for that matter, Goodfellow's, Oceanaire, Zelo--in this space, right? Well guess again, Mac, because while the desserts that come from the hands of actual pastry chefs can be prettier than a cash machine spraying Jacksons, we figure there ain't no dessert beats a classic American layer cake or classic American pie--and nobody does those better than Big Daddy. Drop by for drop-dead lemon chiffon pie, pecan pie, and even that never-seen test of dessert smarts,... More »
We like to complain about our tax money at work, or not at work, depending on how you spin it. So often it seems like our hard-earned cash ends up in some sieve of a social or defense program that we ... More »
For some, Saturday is a day of strenuous outdoor play. For others, it is a holy day of rest. For still others, it is a day reserved for pulling the neighbor's Buick out of the fish pond after his weekly all-you-can-drink Friday fish fry at the... More »
