It's the Manny Pacquiao of quality-conscious grocery stores - small in size, but pound-for-pound, perhaps the best in the game. A full-sized cart couldn't squeeze through the skinny, makeshift aisle between the local heirloom apples and foraged morels, but all offerings are fresh and in prime condition. The cheese selection is heaped on a tiny counter, but it contains raw-milk wonders courtesy of small batch producers from around the world. While Bi-Rite is a destination for shoppers on the hunt for top-notch ingredients, the deli and meat counters do a brisk business selling sandwiches and prepared items - like a stellar turkey meatloaf, house-made soups, and mashed potatoes. Don't forget: Bi-Rite runs a fantastic ice cream shop right across the street.
Hey, all you holiday slackers out there. Thanksgiving's tomorrow, as you've probably heard, and Bi-Rite Market has all sorts of delicious sides you can buy and then cunningly pass off as your own. But... More »
There are fine wines. And then there are the ones to bust out on a near-daily basis: end of the day. Your widescreen TV is glowing. Maybe your friends are headed over. Or you decided to cozy up with t... More »
Can't believe it's almost November? Neither can we. But the holidays are almost upon us, which means that it's time to start thinking about turkeys, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and menu-planning, wheth... More »
For the past year, we've been smuggling home bottles of preserved lemon syrup from Brooklyn's Morris Kitchen. Bi-Rite Market was an early supporter of this company, carrying its ginger and spiced appl... More »

Most of the Bay Area's small-batch, artisan coffee roasters sell their beans out of the back of the shop or at a handful of widely scattered cafes. A coffee geek in training either has to do an awful lot of driving to compare wares -- or simply walk to the coffee shelf at Bi-Rite. Sam Mogannam stocks more than half a dozen Bay Area microroasters, some of which are almost impossible to find within city limits: Ecco and Barefoot, De La Paz and Equator, Four Barrel and Ritual. The coffees... More »
Yep, it sounds like the kind of place where Andy Griffith and pals might have lollygagged over frosted glasses of ice-cream soda. But since 1964, this family-owned and -operated bodega has been a palliative for San Francisco's salubrious-minded foodies (and today, a great alternative for those who dig Whole Foods but prefer to support Mom and Pop). This diminutive boutique market specializes in organic produce, high-end breads, sustainably raised meats, fine artisan cheeses, and pretty much anything else you'd care to sink your teeth into. Whether you want something to nosh on while sunbathing in Dolores Park or need a few vital ingredients for that Friday night feast, it's the perfect place to sample succulent, always-fresh fruits or stock up on gourmet deli items to impress your fellow picnickers. While the ambience toes a line between bourgeois and rustic, stuff like organic bananas, mouthwatering muffaletta sandwiches, and biodynamically produced wines make the long weekend lines and semisteep prices well worth your time and moolah.
The market is nice & has tasty things, but I go across the street and down the block for the ice cream!
Reall choice stuff right here...
