Description

Dining in a Miami restaurant could be compared to picking wild berries. Some are unripe, some are rotten, some prick you like thorns, and some, like blackberries, are delightfully unique but come with a few pesky seeds. The last describes Berries, a friendly spot that's morphed from a laid-back, take-out wraps and smoothies window to a hip, bustling, hippie-centric café complete with a bohemian ambiance that includes hanging lanterns and a tree planted in the center of the dining room. This place doesn't try to break new culinary ground but succeeds at placing well-prepared, generously sized, and relatively healthful dishes on the table. For starters, try the creamy hummus or crisp fried calamari; then move on to pasta, such as Berries' tasty pumpkin ravioli, or if you're feeling carnivorous, the skirt steak ($19), which comes smothered in blue cheese and is accompanied by potatoes and grilled asparagus. Only qualm: The $10 goat cheese wrap undoubtedly appealed to the taste buds but comprised mostly lettuce. Still, Berries' vibe, the massive portions, and a ladies' night where those with XX chromosomes drink free well alcohol every Thursday from 9 till close more than makes up for a that.

    Sweet Berries Without the Thorns

Eating your way through the creations served in Miami's restaurants is a lot like picking wild berries. Sometimes what you're faced with are immature and not ready for consumption. Sometimes they're plain rotten. Sometimes — Ouch! — they're... More »

Great place for brunch on weekends, but usually gets crowded because it's so good. There's a tofu dinner there (don't recall the name) that's really flavorful if that's your thing. AND please order a shake any time of the day! My favorite: Pineapple, Mango, & Peach.

  • 2007 | Best Restaurant in Coconut Grove

Berries is the type of restaurant that every neighborhood needs at least one of. Whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, when you grab a seat here you know you'll be getting hefty portions of hearty, well-prepared food at eminently reasonable prices (almost all entrées are under $20). The cuisine is nothing you haven't seen before, but chances are you haven't seen it done this consistently well. Fried calamari is greaseless, hummus is creamy with a slight chile piquancy, pastas are... More »

  • 2000 | Best Milkshake

You're in the office, it's midafternoon, and that sweet tooth starts clamoring for attention. A thick, creamy, fruity drink would quiet the ruckus, but you don't want that artificial stuff the fast-food joints peddle. It's too far to drive to the farms in Homestead to get the real thing. The alternative is this roadside stand just south of U.S. 1. Take your pick of fresh papaya, mango, or kiwi juice, or mix and match to create a new concoction. Nonfat frozen yogurt keeps the calories down,... More »
