Description

Benny's is a Colorado classic, a Colorado Mexican restaurant that serves fat-ass burritos, enormous nacho platters, free chips and salsa, and (allegedly) 350 gallons of margaritas every weekend. This is a favorite go-to place for a side of chicharrones (crisp and hot and greasy as hell) and a bowl of green chile (indubitably Coloradan -- thick and slick and full of pig). But there's plenty more on the menu that will give you a true taste of uniquely Colorado cuisine.

  • 2010 | Best Hangover Breakfast

Benny Armas got his start more than three decades ago, cooking in other people's kitchens. But from the moment he opened Benny's, his own place in central Denver, it's been a Denver institution, growing bigger (gaining a new patio last year) and better, catering to generations of families, friends -- and drunks. Because Benny's regulars know that as welcoming as this spot can be for lunch and dinner, there's simply no better restorative than a breakfast burrito or a big plate of Benny's... More »

  • 2003 | Best Green Chile

Ah, Benny's, how do we love thee From your sprawling expanse of dining rooms to your potent margaritas to your gringo-friendly menu, it's no wonder you pack 'em in from morning to night. Straddling the fence between the old-world Mexican of Chihuahua and the modern culinary horrors of Taco Bell and squeeze-bottle salsa, you stand firm, giving legions of hungry Denverites Mexican food with the Rocky Mountain twist they crave. In particular, we love you for your green chile. There's nothing... More »

  • 2002 | Best Burrito

Since he started out in the kitchen of the Oak Alley Inn over two decades ago, Benny Armas has been winning fans with his cooking, and the sirloin-steak burrito at his namesake Benny's Restaurante y Cantina gives ample proof why. This is the kind of addictive fare that gives Mexican food a good name in this town -- and keeps you coming back, and back, and back for more. The burrito starts with long strips of steak, liberally seasoned, which are thrown on the grill until the edges char but... More »

  • 2001 | Best Chips and Salsa

Although it seems like Benny Armas, owner of Benny's Restaurante & Cantina, has been around forever (he started in the kitchen at the late, great Oak Alley Inn twenty years ago, and today his namesake place has lines out the door), his chips are always fresh and his salsa always sassy. A second after you reply "yes" to what are often the server's only words of English -- "chips and salsa" -- a basket lands on your table, full of freshly fried and lightly salted tortilla chips, accompanied... Tacos Jalisco does a good job of blending the Mexican, New Mexican, Texan and Coloradan styles of Mexican food into one reasonably coherent whole, and even offers authentic side trips into Michoacán and norteño cuisine. But Benny's doesn't even t... More »

I've been eating at Benny's a few times a month for about 10 years. This place is never not busy, but somehow you never have to wait long. I love the combo plates.
