Description

Billing itself as a “gastropub meets Texas icehouse,? Beaver’s is really neither of those things and something greater than the sum of those descriptions. It’s still one of the most reliably creative restaurants in town, taking risks with Korean-Mexican-Gulf Coast-inspired dishes like jasmine rice cakes with goat cheese, pepitas and kimchi that aren’t expected amongst the barbecue-heavy menu, yet work stunningly well. Beaver’s also still has the best macaroni and cheese in town, as well as one of the strongest cocktail programs.

  • 2011 | Best Veggie Burger

For many, Beaver's sets the pace when it comes to non-traditional barbecue in Houston, so it is still a challenge to get vegetarians to walk through the door -- until they learn about The Nut Burger. The patty is concocted from a brown rice base with nuts mixed throughout and seems to be held together by static cling. Topping it with cheese not only makes it taste great but also helps hold it together. Meatatarians will not be fooled; the burger is not shredded flesh. But that... More »

  • 2010 | Best Bloody Mary

The folks at Beaver's begin their tantalizing Sunday brunch cocktail with a zesty blend of tomato juice, bruised celery, lime, garlic, Worcestershire, salt and pepper. They spice it up with both wasabi and their own special Ex-Wife Hot Sauce (a kick-you-in-the-pants blend of chipotle and red and green Tabasco). The tomato juice is infused with all of these savory ingredients for several hours before being strained. As if that weren't tasty enough, you then get to choose from four types of... More »

  • 2010 | Best Chicken-Fried Steak

This isn't your mama's chicken-fried steak -- it's an obscene tower of goodness, impaled with a wood-handled steak knife, daring you to defeat it. Unlike many other CF steaks in town, the accompaniments at Beaver's are just as good as the main event: mashed sweet potatoes and Southern-style greens, all swaddled in a rich mushroom gravy with a side of Texas toast. And the star of the show Perfectly crusted on the outside, moist and decadent on the inside. Fair warning -- the faint... More »

  • 2009 | Best Macaroni and Cheese

It's difficult to pick a favorite from the small menu at Beaver's ever since Jonathan Jones took over as head chef, which is truly a sign of an extraordinary kitchen. But it's the unassuming macaroni and cheese which shines, and which makes every other macaroni and cheese dish in Houston tremble in its ramekins. A generous serving is enough for two people, but you won't want to share. The corkscrew pasta isn't your typical elbow macaroni style, all the better to hold the thick, creamy... More »

Jonathan has managed to add his own special touch to just about everything here. Last Friday I had his Fish special - Amber Jack oven roasted and served over mashed potatoes with mushrooms, scallions and peas. He scowled when I called Shepherd's Pie, but it did remind me of it. Of course Shepherd's Pie doesn't have a not too sweet sauce of fresh Texas peaches... Go! You won't be disappointed.
