Description

Beard Papa Sweets Cafe first opened in Osaka, Japan. It's best to ignore the creepy logo -- a beanie-wearing man with a white beard and black pipe -- and enjoy the Japanese-style cream puffs. They come stuffed with dozens of flavors like peach yogurt, green tea honey, apple cinnamon, and chocolate banana, and are baked fresh every half hour. The Upper West Side bakery serves Paris Brest, a French take on donuts filled with custard, and Mud coffee to wash the sugar down. Just try not to mind the giant cardboard cut-out of Beard Papa that stares at you while you snack. --Jessica Goodman
