Inside this Spring watering hole, an 18-foot waterfall, surfboard-lined walls and plenty of beach-related paraphernalia take customers far from the shopping-center surroundings - all the way to Galveston, or so owner Brian Scott hopes. In only two months, the Houston Fire Department captain's bar has begun to take on its own identity, playing host to a multitude of neighborhood youth looking to drink and dance to something besides country music. DJs and musicians enliven Fridays and Saturdays, and nearly a dozen TVs and a gigantic projector have been installed. Twelve beers are available on tap, but Beach Bums offers almost any kind of beverage you can think of, including flavored vodkas and frozen margaritas.
New owner reopened Wednesday, January 12th. First impression: This is a neighborhood tavern. It may be too early to judge but it's nothing special and not many changes from previous ownership. Fresh paint here, there and in restrooms. Quite a few new flatscreen TVs but the prices seem have gone up. The Good: The first night crowd was mixed with quite a few local/regulars, folks that the old management had run off & out of area visitors. It's fair to say that the unofficial opening was a success for the new owner. The not so good: The wait staff, although enthusiastic, don't quite have a handle on products & pricing yet. The new owner has made it clear that he's not concerned about catering to a local/regular crowd. He's more interested in upscaling his clientele. Hey, that's OK, his business, his prerogative.
I have been here a few time and I don't like this place. I can't explain why - it makes me feel icky and awkward. Idk, I am always really anxious to leave (like, I won't even finish my drink) and I feel like I need mouthwash or something clean. Ughhh, I'm sure I'll go back because I know so many people that like it I have yet to enjoy the vibe.
