In a town with as many blues enthusiasts as St. Louis, the question of which blues club is best can be a topic of spirited discussion. BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups inhabits a historic brick buildings that oozes atmosphere, and it offers a first-rate selection of local and touring performers. BB's features a varied schedule of musical acts, a large year-round seating capacity and full-service kitchen specializing in Cajun and Creole food, in addition to a selection of American bar food.
Hey stuff: Stop breaking! It's been an interesting week of recovery for RFT Music. Our website totally beefed it last weekend, our blog server gave itself some sort of boo-boo that still has a flimsy ... More »
Plenty of excellent shows this week; particularly as we enter the weekend -- local releases galore. We'll get into that in more detail on the weekend post though. Supposedly, the world is ending this... More »
So I do two of these show pick posts per week, one on Monday (which highlights shows for each day of the week) and one on Friday (which lists shows for the weekend). I've explained in this space befor... More »
Roland Johnson is a true entertainer. This charismatic local soul performer can be found any week during regular gigs at Beale on Broadway, BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups and Hammerstone's. Usually backed by the Voodoo Blues Band, Johnson steps out... More »
Before we get into it: I am sure you are all already aware that White Rabbits is playing in town this week. And I am sure you've all seen this ubiquitous press photo, wherein all the members of the ba... More »
In a town with as many blues enthusiasts as St. Louis, the question of which blues club is best can be a topic of spirited discussion. Last year's "Best Blues Club" winner Beale on Broadway remains a strong contender for the honor, for all the reasons cited in its 2011 entry. But for 2012, the nod returns once again to its across-the-street neighbor (and previous multiple winner of this award), BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups. Both venues inhabit historic brick buildings that ooze atmosphere, and... More »
There are lots of places in St. Louis to hear the blues, but BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups stands apart, both as a music venue and as a sort of unofficial clubhouse for local blues musicians. Just a few blocks south of Busch Stadium, BB's has live music seven nights a week, with local and traveling bands playing to an ever-shifting mix of dedicated blues fans, younger folks just out for a good time and tourists seeking an authentic St. Louis blues experience. The styles on tap can range from... More »
The blues -- the music and the state of mind -- can be found all over town, but its true home is downtown on Broadway, just a little bit south of Busch Stadium. Operating in a restored nineteenth-century building that's been (among other things) a boarding house, transient hotel and house of ill repute, BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups anchors the area's so-called blues triangle and serves as a virtual headquarters for local blues fans and musicians, offering food, drink and a mix of... With the 21st-century renovations to its 19th-century building pretty much complete, BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups retains its title as St. Louis' blues headquarters, a seven-nights-a-week hub of activity for local music lovers, tourists and musicians alike. BB's continues to offer an impressive variety of touring blues bands and local and regional blues and jazz performers, and the newly expanded stage, second-floor seating and balcony add up to an improved experience for both audience and... These days the best blues in town can be found in the so-called South Broadway triangle, the few-block stretch where Broadway angles its way southeastward to usurp Fourth Street. And BB's remains the anchor of the area, presenting a mix of touring acts and local and regional performers seven nights a week. Not content to rest on its laurels, the club recently completed a major remodeling project, adding a second floor inside and a balcony outside that effectively doubles its capacity, not to... More »
Though it took several tries for 700 South Broadway to catch on as a music venue, BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups recently celebrated its tenth anniversary at that very address--and so it's easy to imagine that it was always meant to be here. Like the blues, the nineteenth-century brick building that houses BB's is old, funky and full of stories, to the point where it seems to resonate with the music made inside. The joint jumps into the wee hours seven nights a week, thanks to a carefully... More »
There's nothing worse than the sinking feeling that accompanies a letdown of a much-hyped experience. It's a slowly deflating helium balloon. (Your prom night, for example.) Conversely, there's nothing better than a night that's a sure bet. BB's is exactly what a blues club should be: kind of hard to find, long, brick and teeming with enough talent that you don't even have to check who's playing before you go. It's close enough to Busch Stadium to beckon Cards fans during the summer, but go... More »
The blues don't need a fancy house to live in. The blues are perfectly comfortable on the busted-down front porch of a Mississippi farmhouse, in a one-room shack off a dirt road out in the country or crammed into one end of a sweaty little neighborhood bar next to the pay phone and the cigarette machine. Some folks get nervous if the blues try to move too far uptown, go somewhere too grand. Lose the funk and you lose the flavor, they say. For those purists, the more rundown the surroundings,... The nineteenth-century building that houses BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups had been a private home, boarding house, reception hall, millinery, transient hotel, bar, diner and house of ill repute before Mark O'Shaughnessy turned it into a blues and jazz club for the first time back in 1976. As it turned out, our fair city wasn't quite ready to embrace its musical heritage, and the club closed the following year. Undaunted, O'Shaughnessy held on to the building, kept making improvements and tried... More »
With the 21st-century renovations to its 19th-century building pretty much complete, BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups retains its title as St. Louis' blues headquarters, a seven-nights-a-week hub of activity for local music lovers, tourists and musicians alike. BB's continues to offer an impressive variety of touring blues bands and local and regional blues and jazz performers, and the newly expanded stage, second-floor seating and balcony add up to an improved experience for both audience and musicians. (The extra wall space also provides room to display more of the club's extensive collection of blues memorabilia.) While there certainly are other worthy contenders for the designation of Best Blues Club, BB's remains the essential St. Louis blues music experience.
We ran into Beatle Bob once here on a friend's birthday. Made our night!
