This casually chic waterfront grill at Andre Balazs's Standard hotel/spa serves the same menu as the indoor Lido restaurant but in an open-air tropical garden setting with a panoramic view of Biscayne Bay. At dinner (a more enjoyable option than lunch, when service is spottier and food choices more limited), the healthful Mediterranean-inspired menu is divided. About half consists of chef-conceived creations like herb-seared local tuna with romesco sauce, creamy-centered fresh burratina cheese with haricot vert salad and truffle vinaigrette, chef Mark Zeitouni's take on bouillabaisse, and a fun platter of three minicheeseburgers. The other half, which features selections from the patio's monster-sized grill, is DIY mix-and-match: a marinated main ingredient (steak, seafood, or tofu) grilled and served with choice of vegetable side and a light sauce (like yellow tomato béarnaise). No matter what kind of diet you're on, it would be a mistake to miss the house-made French fries, equal to Belgium's best.

Waterfront: Miami's got a lot of it. Twenty percent of the county's total area is water. Waterfront restaurants? Hmm. If you mean places diners can get up close and personal with nature — where they can virtually feed fish from their table, and... More »
Natural disasters -- tornadoes, tidal waves, whatever -- are hardly unique to our little weather zone. Nor is thumbing one's nose in the face of Madre Nature's power-tripping. But hurricane parties are a form of gallows humor that... More »
