Baur's is the perfect black-and-white-tiled spot for a cocktail, dinner or dessert before or after a show at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. The original Baur's was a confectionary, and the restaurant is still steeped in old-fashioned white-tablecloth elegance. Chefs may change, but the menu remains both an homage to the Old World -- crab cakes, French onion soup, chateaubriand for two, carved tableside, and whole Dover sole -- and a celebration of new-school playfulness, when the chef gets to experiment with black truffles or blood-orange butter sauce. There's a lovely bar, plenty of private party space and a living room-like lounge with live piano music that encourages lingering.
