Forget all the awful tequila stories you've heard (or told)--the ones that ended hunched over the toilet, waking up in a stranger's bed, or spending the night in jail--because Barrio is out to class up the much-maligned spirit. Tim McKee and Josh Thoma, of La Belle Vie fame, partnered with local real estate developers Tim Rooney and Ryan Burnet (Burnet worked with his father, Ralph, on the illustrious Chambers and W hotels) to create a tequila bar that treats the spring-break party drink with a reverence typically reserved for wine. The dark, cozy space is decorated in a Latin Goth, with an eerie, Day of the Dead-like festivity--you'd hardly recognize it as a former Dunn Bros. coffee shop. Despite Barrio's emphasis on its 100-plus-bottle tequila list, the food is what's really fantastic. Executive chef Bill Fairbanks (a longtime La Belle Vie sous chef) serves refined versions of street foods from Mexico and Central and South America: Tecate-battered fried mahi-mahi tacos, red chile enchilada with fried egg and chorizo, and barbecued pork sopes. He also serves some fancier fare, dishes like tequila-cured salmon, ahi tuna with quinoa, and diver scallop ceviche. Just make sure to save room for the churros.
Yes, it's true that most people have a tequila story that isn't one they like to remember. Usually it involves college and too many shots after alr...

It's a good general rule to be cautious of drinking anything named after a movie centered on the delivery of severe physical trauma. Yet the art of the tequila mixer, which can often make you feel like you've been clocked in the skull by a Bruce Lee nunchaku, is done no better justice than at Barrio. Enter the Dragon is the name for one of Barrio's subtler yet kickier concoctions, a margarita that balances the sweet tang of passion fruit with a brisk jolt of pepper, creating a blend that... The psychoactive properties of absinthe have been greatly exaggerated over its long history, but that doesn't make the idea of combining it with tequila any less outlandish. The Cobra Verde, the crown jewel in Barrio's finely tuned selection of across-the-board spectacular margaritas, pulls that wild stunt off with delicious aplomb. The anise-rich qualities of absinthe combine favorably with the lush tang of top-shelf tequila, and incorporating that combination into a refreshing yet bracing... More »
Tequila has a reputation for creating evenings that don't end well. (By the way, we're not discussing the assless chaps incident. Ever.) But in the hands of a couple of noted real estate developers (including Ryan Burnet, who worked on the Chambers and W hotels) and restaurateurs Tim McKee and Josh Thoma (the guys behind La Belle Vie, Solera, and Smalley's Caribbean Barbeque), the much-maligned spirit feels like a class act. Shea Design transformed a tiny Nicollet Mall coffee shop into a... More »
