Valley tastemaker and Barrio Cafe chef and owner Silvana Salcido Esparza’s tasteful and welcoming eatery in Scottsdale's SouthBridge complex focuses on a range of Mexican cuisine from Mexican street food to sophisticated signature dishes. The more wallet-friendly selections are what the restaurant does best, like the Arizona burrito with luscious pork green chili, a carne asada sandwich Mexicano, and 30 varieties of street-size tacos spanning the familiar to the exotic (try the al pastor with slices of sweet pineapple, beer-battered fish with a spicy cream salsa, or the satisfying cactus and egg with queso fresco). Desserts, like the churro with cajeta (caramelized goat’s milk) are satisfying as well. And for tequila lovers, there are over 350 kinds to choose from.

Let's get one thing straight: Mexican Independence Day is not Cinco de Mayo as many Americans believe (seriously, stop doing that!). It is the 16th of September, or Dieciseis de Septiembre, and a day ... More »
Rumor has it there's a cool, skinny chola at the bar. No need to size her up or whistle too loud; this chick keeps it real and authentic without the unnecessary mixes and syrups. Yep, she's the skinny, fresh face of a kick-ass margarita with all the essential ingredients -- Jose Cuervo Tradicional Blanco Silver Tequila, agave nectar, and lime juice -- and without the diet-driven hype. True, her complex flavors make her a little hard to read. And if you ask for her to touch a... More »
Silvana Salcido Esparza's new restaurant in Scottsdale's SouthBridge complex may not be what the Valley chef originally had intended (the menu and space have been combined with Esparza's quickly shuttered Silvana Bistro next door), but her gourmet street-size taco concept has remained intact -- and that's what we love most. Ranging from the familiar to the exotic, there are 30 varieties to choose from in categories of chicken, seafood, pork, beef, and vegetarian. We like the al pastor... More »
