The original Barnaby's, on Fairview, is a homey Montrose mainstay, and much more eclectic-feeling than its four siblings (River Oaks, Midtown, Woodway and the new Market Square location downtown). The American food is the same as the other Barnaby's outposts, though, with interesting twists on traditional sandwiches and salads: pesto chicken sandwich with artichoke hearts, the turkey breast with cranberry mayo, blue-cheese fondue waffle fries, the buffalo burger, and more. (You can still get a regular beef burger or a piece of grilled salmon, of course.) Breakfast and bunch draw long lines at the “Baby Barnaby’s” expansion attached to the main restaurant, which serves only lunch and dinner.
Too frequently, pasta is the only vegetarian alternative at a restaurant. And too frequently, it's merely acceptable. But the spinach and cheese lasagna ($7.95) at Barnaby's Cafe (604 Fairview, 713-522-0106; 1701 South Shepherd, 713-520-5131; 414... More »
It's not always easy to determine what will become an institution, or why. Often, what seems a lock to those folks who like to think of themselves as being in the know proves to be little more than the flavor of the moment. And what those same... More »
Never atop any list of health foods, hot dogs seem to get a bad rap these days. But if you feel the urge to splurge and gobble down a dog, you won't find a better option than the all-natural foot-long at Barnaby's Cafe. Served on a toasted bun and sliced down the middle into two meaty halves, this hot dog is seared to perfection, with the grill marks to prove it. Purists can order it plain and revel in that all-beef flavor, or pile on the cheese and chili. If you still have room afterwards,... More »
Not many salads can last for three meals, but Barnaby's chicken Mediterranean salad does it consistently. The whole affair starts with a massive plate of shredded lettuce. Then come the thin, crunchy red onions, slices of roma tomatoes, some plump black olives and a mound of seasoned chicken, thinly shredded. The dome of salad is topped with a generous helping of feta and served with a side of zesty, zingy and creamy vinaigrette. The perfect dish for a heath-conscious diet, it's hearty,... More »
Barnaby's Just flip on the tube or try dodging a pop-up ad and it's clear: This is the year of the Atkins and South Beach diets. But Barnaby's has done the high-protein, low-carb thing for years. Owner Jeff Gale (who named the eatery after his dearly departed sheepdog) understands his ultra-healthy clientele so well that bottles of Bragg Liquid Aminos (a popular garnish for those in serious workout training) are as much a table staple as ketchup and salt and pepper. Lunch at any of the three... More »
Don't be fooled by the somewhat decrepit facade of this Montrose breakfast haven. It seems the owners of this gay-owned Montrose staple decided to forgo the manscaping and instead focus on the classic American cuisine, delicious fresh-squeezed juices, on-the-case staff and affordable prices. After all, it's what's inside that counts, right? A welcoming rainbow flag in the window beckons patrons, who wait for a table on the patio and cruise the LGBT scene before heading in for comfort food in a comfortable setting. Baby Barnaby's is the place to enjoy stylish Houston gays and tasty food.
