Description

Barley John's can hardly be called undiscovered anymore, even in far-flung Mounds View. After all, the pub picked up a pair of City Pages' "Best of" honors in 2010¬ for brewpub and best suburban bar. While Barley John's signature brews are a major attraction, they don't let the food side of the equation down. You'll find plenty of typical bar fare on the menu, from burgers to beer-battered fish to a bevy of pizzas (including a hot chipotle variety), but there are also items like a portobello mushroom melt, pasta specials, and hearty fare like beef tenderloin and a smoked pork chop.

While we admire any bar that attempts to make its own brew, many do so badly. Drinkers may be disappointed to find that overly ambitious pubs serve watery beer, and nothing else. That's not the case with Barley John's. Its list shifts seasonally, but notable brews include the hoppy Stockyard IPA and the chocolaty, weighty Old Eight Porter. 2010 | BEST SUBURBAN BAR

While the suburban landscape is grimly filled with T.G.I. Fridays, Chili's, and Red Lobsters, these aren't the type of places you want to chill. The food is edible, but each location is hardly a unique or enlightening experience. Unfortunately, really great destination pubs and restaurants can be hard to find when you live in a 'burb. The BEST beer in the US! Food is also very good. Organic/local/gourmet! Staff are awesome! They know food & beer and remember people!
