It’s been less than three years since former Campanile general manager Claudio Blotta and his wife Adria opened Barbrix is 2009, and the converted house tucked away off busy Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake is already a community hub. Choose from the lengthy beer list or sip hand-picked wines from Argentina to Austria – either at the bar or, on a good night, on the outdoor patio. Chef Don Dickman’s Mediterranean-inspired small plates are perfect for indecisive patrons torn between the cheeses and charcuterie, or heartier portions like the mixed seafood spaghetti and Moroccan-spiced lamb chops with yogurt harissa. (Even dessert looks like it could be a conundrum, what with chocolate Nutella soufflé cake, honey-lavender panna cotta and Tahitian vanilla bean gelato “drowned” in espresso.) Hipsters aren’t above doing brunch, and on Sundays, Barbrix’s version includes the usual brunch options of frittatas and French toast, served alongside banh mi and meatball parmesan sandwiches that might leave you full well into dinner.

Had some fabulous small tastes at this jumping new Silver Lake wine bar last night. Sat on the patio amidst a happy, hip crowd and just kept tasting and tasting. It's super reasonable for such gourmet fare and the wine is, too -- no glasses over $10. Two of us sampled the skirt steak, fig salad with goat cheese, cauliflower salad, crisp squash, crostini and spicy polenta. Don't even talk about the ginger berry shortcakes. I hear fab things about the arancini and scallops. I'm going' back as soon as I can!
If you beg for it, it will come: a questionable lesson, proven effective at Barbrix. The Silver Lake wine bar/restaurant is bringing back happy hour on not just one but three nights every week, after an "overwhelming response" to the first happy-hour event. From 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, glasses of already reasonably priced beers and wines will be half-off at the bar. And chef Don Dickman's duck fat–popped fennel-pollen popcorn will be available for $1. Happy hour,... More »
