Barbette is an Uptown dining legend--the fries consistently win awards as the best in town, the wine list is shockingly affordable and well chosen, the food has tended to showcase fine-dining sourcing at everyday prices. Seriously, this has long been the place wine and dining professionals go when they're picking up their own checks.
Good things happen at Barbette on Monday evenings. It's is the start of the weeknight happy hour, which runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday. ...

Charming Barbette has the market cornered when it comes to bohemian notions of romance. First, the food is French, the leading cuisine in sexy eating, and the kitchen stays open past midnight every night. Second, the quirky space is dimly lit after dusk, with twinkling strings of multicolored lights draped above its sidewalk seats. Third, the quirky, casual vibe encourages guests to relax and be themselves, making it fun to look around the restaurant and play Guess the Depth of the Couple's... More »
Best Wine List is always a tough category. Best at what? Italian bottles? Affordable ones? Obscure artisan producers? Rare vintages? This year, since we've vowed to increase the frequency of our celebratory revelry--the recession is finally lifting, right?--we decided to pick a spot with the best selection of sparkling wines. That's why we'll be spending more nights at Barbette with a champagne flute in hand, watching the tiny bubbles glinting in the candlelight as they ascend to... More »
What makes a romantic evening? Hell, a bag full of White Castle sliders can do the trick if the stars are properly aligned, so it's impossible to say for certain. But some factors are virtually guaranteed to make a convivial evening. Chic sophistication is good, but you don't want a place that's imposing or uptight. You want the place to be busy, happy, active...but not crushed by a horde of people. An evocation of a romantic locale won't hurt...how about Paris? You want affordable,... More »
Not only are the fries at Café Barbette tasty, they're pretty, too. Served in a white ceramic bowl, they're cut in long, slender rectangles with golden edges and glistening sides. They curve slightly inward, piled high on top of one another like a fried potato orgy. Four bucks will get you a small serving, $6 a large. Some people enjoy the purity of a plain French fry--just salt, nothing crazy--but the pomme frites, as they're called at the French-themed cafe, also come with... More »
It's a wonder Barbette's wildly popular fries aren't regulated by the state; serving them from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. seems a bit much for the public morals. These darling hand-cut irregulars are fried in small batches to crispy caramel perfection; tender and fluffy within, they taste like potatoes that went to Paris and came back with advanced degrees in art and style. They are served with a ramekin of luscious golden saffron aioli, that addictively smooth, garlic mayonnaise that you'd... More »
New York City's famed Lespinasse in the St. Regis Hotel recently closed. Do you care? Of course not, because you got yours. New York may have lost a four-star restaurant with astronomical prices, but Lisa Carlson, an ex-chef de partie from that famed French establishment, has been helming the kitchen of little can-do CafÈ Barbette for the past two years. Even if you don't make it there early enough in the dinner hour for her famed appetizer specials, the best fries around are... More »
So cheap, so good. Café Barbette's oft-changing, Europe-heavy wine list has begun to enact a subtle change among a certain group of Uptown fans, causing them to treat--hold on to your hats here--wine with the same casual trust and enthusiasm previously reserved for beer. It's the pricing that's done it, we think, and all hail Annette Peters, wine-list designer and import director for the Wine Company, the sole supplier of everything on this list, for showing us that monopolies can be... Barbette, located in Uptown Minneapolis is a gem of a place. I have been to Barbette more that a few times over the past couple years for both lunch and dinners. Barbette models itself after a French bistro with an eclectic casual hip atmosphere. Barbette prides itself on it’s use of local and organic ingredients. Every time I been there I have ordered a steak and every time it was amazing. As an experiment or ongoing evening out, the experience is worth the price. Another benefit is that you can walk over to Chino's for cocktails after a wonderful dinning experience. Enjoy your evening out. GT
awesome late night happy hour. i also like the local art on the walls. i dig the local organic factor. very fun in the spring.
Barbette has the best French food in Minneapolis. So buttery, so good
