A little further west down Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, in so-called Boys Town, the bars are rowdy, packed affairs that pump up the dance music and pump out the drinks. At eastward-leaning Bar Lubitsch, the vibe is decidedly more casual -- and usually less cramped. Sure, the long wooden bar is never completely empty, and on the weekends the black booths that frame the other edge of the space fill up quickly with young drinkers in search of a stiff mixed drink, but a few large well-placed mirrors make the room seem bigger than it is. Most of the house cocktails -- including the mandatory Moscow Mule -- pack a strong vodka kick, but the full bar offers something for everyone, including those not inclined to do their drinking Russian-style. Drop by on a quieter Thursday night and you might just even find your favorite local stand-up comedian in the back, putting on a free show for anyone who cared to drop by.

So these two New York City comics, Josh Haness and Josh Weinstein, move to Los Angeles and, in 2008, decide to put together a show. They want to introduce the inhabitants of their new home to all their cool friends who write for shows like Conan and Family Guy. Some of those friends have names like Demetri Martin and Sarah Silverman and the Sklar Brothers. The Joshes find a place to host their shindig -- Bar Lubitsch, a bar with a retro vibe and bartenders who know how to make a classic... More »
Chill atmosphere in the front bar area and a mix of tunes in the small, but fun, dance area in the back. Lubitsch is a local bar in Hollywood which attracts a crowd that is trendy but not pretentious. The staff there are great. Everyone from the owners to the managers right down to the bar staff all have friendly personalities, and I've met them all. There is no cover but you'll want to show up a bit early on peak nights as the wait to get in can be long. If you enjoy the "dear little water" then be sure to give the vodka menu a look when you're there.
The LA night life can be somewhat overwhelming what with all the new club openings and reopenings of the same clubs with new names. Bar Lubitsch is a great place to sort of stray away from that a little. Though there is usually a line out the door (so get there early) the crowd is much more laid back and the music is definitely more bearable. It's definitely less of a scene and more of a good place to grab some drinks with friends.
