Description

Home to one of the best selections of beers on Smith Street, Bar Great Harry features 20 rotating draft lines, a cask beer, and oodles of bottles. The dark, corner room is a cozy, unpretentious spot to explore craft brews. The barkeeps never hoard their beverage knowledge but instead are generous with samples and happily will spiel you an accessible flavor profile. The menu dutifully details style and ABV, and the bar's blog is regularly updated with what's on tap. Most pints run about six bucks, plus this Carroll Gardens draft den regularly hosts the best breweries--local and far-flung--for tasting events. In spite of the uber-careful pours and borderline nerdy curation of drink, Bar Great Harry's winning quality is that it is so down to earth. The proprietors encourage patrons to bring their dogs, and during the summer months, they open up the wall of black, French doors to the sidewalk. On a fair-weather weekend, folks are chillin', and it’s not uncommon to stroll by and spy humans sipping pints while their canines lap at bowls of dog water. --Alex Spoto

Mike and Ben Wiley are as laid-back as the pet policy at Bar Great Harry, the cozy Carroll Gardens tavern they opened in 2007. Unfinished wood floors, a sidewalk-facing wall of French doors open to the street, and comfy bar stools draw patrons into the low-key beer bar, but the 12 specialty draft lines--and the brothers' friendly expertise regarding all that's on tap, as well as what's not--is what keeps the regulars coming back. BGH's daily blog posts updates about drink selections and ... More »
