Impeccably fresh seafood is served in inventive presentations at a storefront that takes the raw-bar concept to a new level. Hawaiian is accented with lemongrass, daikon, mint, and cilantro; buttery Arctic char gets a mild jolt of horseradish, tobiko, and dill. Oysters, clams, prawns, and Dungeness crab are available unadorned, and the creamy, smoky seafood chowder is perhaps the best in town. It's amazing how many people sneak out of work to get to Bar Crudo's happy hour (5-6:30 p.m.) for $1 oysters and $5 fish tacos.

Now that cooking has become entertainment and cooks our favorite performers, the counter is no longer the worst place in the restaurant to sit. Some counter spots require reservations, while others are the only seats you can easily score. Eat by yourself, and you're dining with company. Sit with a friend, and there are a million activities to comment on. Just remember: If you're eavesdropping on the cooks, they can probably hear you, too.Bar Crudo655 Divisadero (at Grove),... More »
Wondering where to take that date who loves to vacuum seafood when you live in a city by the bay? How about the teeny-tiny oceanic endeavor, Bar Crudo? This intimate, two-story restaurant has the same basic layout as the adjacent Tunnel Top, meaning the upstairs has a cuddly, attic feel (although Crudo is much cleaner and better lit). So this is the perfect spot to nestle next to a significant something or other while slurping oysters, devouring an inventive lobster salad, or partaking in a... More »
