If you mix them, they will come! Bar Abilene has proved this, building an almost cult-like following with their 16-ounce margaritas made with fresh juices and top-shelf tequilas. Truly, people drive in from the farthest corners of the metro area for these jewel-bright drinks made from some 90 tequilas and 30 juices. All hail the beauty of fresh squeezed lime! The kitchen produces some clean, fresh, slightly elevated versions of Mexican favorites. The guacamole is made before your eyes, at tableside, and because of that it's as fresh and good as possible. The chili, made with sirloin steak and black beans, is both rib-sticking and sophisticated. A Frank-Gehry-meets-Hopalong-Cassidy interior, and the biggest television in Uptown round out the experience.

guacamole made at your table...that's all I need :-) Love this place. It's been around for quite a while for a reason.
The best tableside guacamole anywhere. Great margaritas, too.

A critical and often overlooked criterion of happy hours has to do with timing. Sure, two-for-one cocktails are delightful after work, but early evenings aren't exactly the optimal or most responsible time to milk happy hours for all they're worth. At Uptown's Bar Abilene, happy hours thankfully align with the drunk-friendliest hours of the evening. Every night between 9 and 11 p.m., the bar's generally youngish, sharp-dressed customers chase their $2 shots-of-the-day with half-priced beers... More »
Ideally, margaritas should be as plain as the sun in the sky: sun, a few fluffy clouds, sky--perfect! What more do you need? Well, tequila, for one, and not any of that oaked-up junk that arrivistes find so sophisticated; in a margarita, tequila should be pure as sunlight, oak smoke not needed. After the tequila you need triple sec or Cointreau. Easy enough. Then--and this is critical--fresh-squeezed lime juice. Not sour mix, not sour mix from the stanky soda gun, not Rose's lime... More »
As you slide into a booth in the bar area--under the industrial ranch décor of barbed-wire wreaths and lasso light fixtures--you may be momentarily overwhelmed by the two dozen margarita choices on the menu. You could try the tart "Baja Breeze," a concoction of tequila, triple sec, grapefruit juice, and cranberry juice ($5.95). Or the sweet "Pecos Peach," which mixes peach schnapps and peach purée with tequila and lime juice ($7.95). Or the exotic "West Texas Sunset," a... More »
Between the buckskin-colored walls and the rich cherry-hued wood booths, the entire bar area fairly sparkles at this little chunk of the New West right here in the Minneapple. So it should come as no surprise that the cocktails described on Bar Abilene's two-page margarita menu come to the table looking like translucent gems. Think of the Hibiscus margarita ($5.95) as a ruby: a deep red from the not-too-sweet hibiscus juice added to tequila and lime juice and other treasured substances. The... More »
