Description

There are closets in Beverly Hills that have more square footage than Bánh Mì My Tho, but this Alhambra Vietnamese sandwich shop makes far, far better use of its real estate. Here in this tiny space, fresh bread is made daily for the shop's excellent banh mi sandwiches -- some of the best, in fact, in the San Gabriel Valley. Come often enough, and you'll see that everyone has a favorite number: Many choose #2, the classic đặc biệt -- the Vietnamese version of the cold cut sandwich – while others like the charbroiled pork in #8. At no more than three bucks a sandwich, plus another buck or so for a cup of excellent Vietnamese iced coffee, you can do far, far worse for a cheap lunch. And after sitting at the bench outside the shop and devouring one whole, you'll probably go back to your car, scrounge up some of that loose change rattling around in your glove compartment and buy another one for dinner. 90210 can keep its closets. We'll stick with the ones in the 626.

For less than the price of a gallon of gas, you can pick up a bánh mì trúng... More »

  • 2011 | Best Sandwich Shop That Looks Like a Gas Station

Sure, the San Gabriel Valley is home to countless strip-mall banh mi joints, and Banh Mi My Tho is no different. Almost. Walk inside this tiny, shiny Vietnamese sandwich shop, and you'll think you've been transported not to Vietnam but maybe the best gas station convenience store ever. On your right, boxed green tea peeks out from stacked cardboard boxes. On your left, lotto tickets waiting for your bubbles like a Scantron answer sheet. The hot case that dominates the counter -- filled... More »
